Forced Serial Numbers

Often a dealer of C & R firearms will state that serial numbers are "forced".

What exactly does that term mean??

  My experience has been with ex East Block rifles that have been recently imported, i.e. 91/30's, M-44's etc. When many of these rifles were arsenal refurbished back in the 50/60's, bolts and other numbered parts were renumbered to match the receiver/barrel with either a electro pencil or by stamping out the old number and stamping in the new.
  
  This means that no matter what condition the rifle is in, it's NOT FACTORY ORIGINAL. "FORCED" is just a euphemism/weasel word for a mismatched parts gun.

  what r.s. said above is correct as far as it goes, some of the recently imported rifles had the ser. # stamped on the barrel (no number on the receiver). to be able to import them it was nesessary to stamp the receivers as well.
