single shot derringer suicide special i.d.?

my uncle use to keep this in his boot when he was an MP in italy. i tried to put a bullet in it and danged if i cant get anything in it! closest thing to it would be a 22 short and i mean reallll short!
any ideas what this is?

    Don't mean to bad mouth your Uncle, BUT! it looks like a late 19th Century, "4TH OF JULY PISTOL", to me. Granted MP's aren't know for their high IQ's, but I have a real hard time believing any one even a MP, was using a pistol that shot 22 Blanks as a hide-out gun.

    no insult received![:)] but it was indeed kept in his boot so he could sneak it into town on patrol. it was found with his memories and his NAS Rota Police badge. he retired from navy in 67, so its at least that old. it surely wasnt used as a standoff gun. i can understand it being a break contact gun though.
    so tell me more about a 4th july gun? is it a 22 short? its definatley rimfire.

    HeY HeY I think it was a 22 cb cap some of the first rim fire were just a cap sort of like a purcussion cap then some bright sole got the idea to put a ball in the mouth of the cap thus the begaining of the bbcap then came the conical ball cap or cb cap then like all good gun people bigger is better so behold we make a 22 short 22 long 22 long rifle 22 extra long I guess we would have had a 50 rimfire browning machine gun but some where the pressures got to great for a rim fire and we started makeing centerfire ammo.I guess your uncle did not read JEFF COOPER or Elmer Keith. I had a rifle in CB CAP but be aware the us made ones by cci are much longer then RWS that come loose in a round tin.

    Looks almost like an old Star vest pistol but it doesn't have the seperate breechblock. How is it loaded?

    They were made to fire Black Powder Rimfire Blanks for celebratory/salute purposes. No rifleing in the barrel. Flayderman shows a number of them in his book. He calls them "Blank Deringers" and values some of them between $100 & $300.

    bbl is extremely pitted. if there is rifling, its so worn, you cant see it. im gonna have to bore scope it, since my little mirror just wont give me good data.
    then again...why would such a small gun need rifling? i mean, its a gut gun?
    but it seems the consensus is pointing towards a blank gun. hmmm....this may be true. my uncle may have used it to control crowds or use it as a noise maker to break up crowds.....hmmm. you guys gotta understand, rota spain and sig sicily were tuff towns in the 60s.
