Winchester 88 Varmint

20+ years ago I saw a listing in the Gun List for a M88 Varmint version. When I called ,the rifle was already sold.(Big surprise) When I asked the seller what made it a varmint, he said the top of the barrel was completly without cutouts for a rear or front sight and came in.243 only. I had just become interested in collecting the 88 and thought I would eventually stumble across another one. After hundreds of gun shows, no such luck. Has anyone here seen or heard of this "animal" ??

    No, but it would be a good thing to find. I have found a new in the box 88 and it is the best thing in my collection. Keep looking it may be out there.

    My guess it was probably an after market barrel.

    Never thought to ask if the barrel was aftermarket or if it had original Winchester markings. The seller presented it as if it was original. Would a Gunsmith be able to tell if a barrel was original or had been replaced?? I can imagine there are guys out there that could fool the best of us?
