Cowboy shooting rifles

I have been thinking about getting started in cowboy action shooting. I have a questions about the rifles that you are allowed to use. A salesman at a local gunstore told me that not any old lever action would be OK to use. It had to be a replica of a valid western era model.

Is this part true?

Second, how about the Winchester 94, is this rifle allowed for use in the cowboy matches?

I already know that the rifle has to use a pistol calibre,
not anyting in 30-30.

    Hello different groups have different rules check on the web site of the group you want to shoot with. A winchester model 94 in 44 mag is legal but a marlin 1891/1892 in 32/20 is not a marlin 336 in 45 long colt is legal both the 44mag and 45colt were not made in rifles back then but the 32/20 was .Go with a colt med frame lightning rifle better then a lever gun. SORRY BERT H

    First off,WELCOME to the boards.!

    Most any lever gun with outside hammer is legal with a very few exceptions.
    The Winnys are legal but most pards fine the long lever throw too slow for competiton.That plus the fact that many have broken the 'pip' that keeps the cartridges in the mag tube.The Rossi's can be made to run faster than the Winnnys,and the '73's can be made to run like a machine gun...but cost about as much as one too.
    If I were starting over I'd buy a model '92 from Nate Kiowa Jones that is 'race ready' and slick as all get out....because it fits my budget better than a tuned '73. :(

    According to the January 2005 edition of the SASS handbook:

    Rifles:
    Main, Team and Side Matches (not Long Range or Precision Rifle)
    Any lever or slide action, tubular fed, exposed hammer rifle or carbine manufactured between 1860 and 1899, or any reproduction thereof.

    -Centerfire .25-20 caliber or larger
    -Rifle must be in a "pistol" caliber (examples include, but are not
    limited to, .32-20, .38 Special, .38-40, .44-40 and .45 Colt.
    No "rifle" calibers such as .30-30 or .38-55 are allowed).
    -Only 1860 to 1899 period style original or replica open iron sights
    or tang-mounted peep sights are allowed.
    -Barrel must be over 16" in length.
    -Rifles with box magazines may not be used.
