what's the lowdown on Rock Island's 1911s? Worth the $ or am I better off going with a Kimber or Springfield?

    Go with the springfield or kimber THE rock island is made in asia and not true copy parts don't interchange with 1911 aftermarket parts.

    I would go with a norinco before a rock island, I have seen some nice guns after a bit of work with a norinco, but no matter what you do to them their value will remain what you started with, I reference it to putting a new engine in a car will do nothing to raise the blue book value, same with a firearm in most cases, and YOU WILL have to put more money in them, so spend it now on a gun that will hold its value

    I have a Colt, Kimber, Springfield, and a RIA. The RIA is a steal!

    I bought the RIA for myself for Christmas this last year. The gun has ran flawless out of the box. I have at least 700rds through it so far of mixed weights and hollow points including Corbons with no jams. Accuracy is good. Trigger is good. The sights are small and the finish is light. Overall I'm very happy with this gun and would highly recommend one. Only thing I've changed on it is the grips. I put a set of Hogue Hardwoods on it. As far as parts interchangeablility, I have found most 1911 parts that say "drop in" to mean "drop in" to a gunsmith.

    Dans right, after he quoted me the price on 1 I ran down and ordered 1. For the money they can't be beat, on the other hand you are asking us to compare apples to oranges here. If your going high end then you would want to go for the Kimber or Springfield (why not a Colt is beyond me) if you want a low priced shooter then this is your gun and it can be upgraded cheaply.

    Rock Islands are not very good. I went out shooting with a friend that bought one and just about every other shot it jammed. He sent it back and they fixed it. But then he bought some GI 1911 parts to put on it and the parts would not fit. But Rock Island claims that GI parts will fit. But i would much rather go with a different 1911 than the Rock Island.
