contender carbine barrel length

Hello,
I have a question regarding the length required for a contender bbl to used in the carbine config. Would a 16" bbl with the integral muzzle brake added be long enough? It is better than 17" with the brake. I'm sure contenderman could shed some light. Thanx,

    Thanx, I knew shotguns had the 18" rule, but thought rifles might have been 16".

    Legal rifle barrel length in the U.S. is 16" (sixteen). The exception to this rule is when a flash hider is permanently fixed to a shorter barrel that then measures 16 inches.

    Shotgun barrels must be 18 inches.

    The manufacture, possession, sale, barter, trade, gift,
    transfer or acquisition of any machine guns, sub-machine guns,
    automatic rifles or any other firearm not a rifle having a barrel
    length of sixteen (16) inches or greater or not a shotgun having
    a barrel length of eighteen (18) inches or greater or a revolver
    or pistol having a barrel length of more than twelve (12) inches
    is prohibited.

    So the aforementioned bbl would fit the bill? It is 16" plus the brake.[:D]

    The proper way to handle this question is to contact T/C and get them to send you the ruling. They had a huge court case over this a while back. If you're in a hurry, check the BATFE website for the exact rule.

    It is my understanding (occasionally flawed) that the individual states have the last say so over pistol barrel lengths with regard to hunting rules and regulations. This is most certainly true with the special case of T/C Contenders, Encores and G2's. BATFE sets the basic rules such as noted and the states add on to those. Here is a layman's observations:

    "This "pistol" is in a class by itself. Some consider this to be a short barreled rifle, even to the extent that in certain states it is illegal to own this gun in particular calibers. The pistol can be had in calibers ranging from .22 all the way up to some of the magnum rifle cartridges; in barrel lengths from 8" to 16". The most popular barrels tend to be the 45/.410 shotgun barrel, which is illegal in the peoples republic of california, and the magnum pistol barrels. It is amazing to me that such an innocuous arm can skirt so close to the edge of the law, but because of the way the law is written it does. This is not by any stretch a combat arm, and is the exact opposite of an assault rifle. This is strictly a hunting and target piece and has no other practical applications. The gun control act of 1934 makes it illegal to own a rifle with a barrel of less than 16", or a shotgun with a barrel of less then 18". It also makes the ownership of a rifle with the buttstock removed a crime, and it makes it illegal to own a shoulder stocked pistol. These laws are so arbitrary and stupid (neither quality being unusual in the field of firearms law), that it is difficult to see how they passed. There are rifle and pistol versions of this gun with barrels up to 21" in length. All of the parts interchange, and it is possible to have a pistol grip rifle with a 16" to 21" barrel, as well as a 10" barreled rifle with a full stock. Such mixing of components is illegal, the way the law now stands. It is a foolish set of laws, but the shooter who ignores them does so at his peril. It should also be noted that conviction of any of these offences will make one a felon, and so unable to legally own any type of firearm for life. Forewarned is forearmed."
