Sako questions

I just took in a Sako Riihimaki N:o 33000 (as stamped on the receiver). On the barrel, just ahead of the receiver, is stamped Cal. 222 MAG. The rifle has a 24" heavy barrel and the safety is on the bolt.

I believe this rifle has been altered from 222 to 222 MAG because the letters on the caliber markings do not match. Further, the magazine is marked 222 and not 222 MAG and it is too short to accept 222 MAG ammo.

I found another similar rifle on auction with serial number 39613 and a manufacture date of 1958; the same year that the 222 MAG was introduced.

Can anyone tell me the date that S#33000 was manufactured? Further, what are you thoughts on my assumptions?

    Ron,

    The records I have from the original Sako Collectors club indicate that .222 mag production started with serial #44987. Your serial #, 33000, falls between the following:

    29135 Fall of 1955
    38765 Spring of 1958

    All of the above are for the L46 action series. I don't have any insight into the other features you mentioned, but considering .222 mag production started @ serial#44987, yours may have been converted.

    Ron- just to clarify- the serials I gave you for the Fall of 55' and Spring of 58' correspond to the .222 Rem, NOT the .222 Rem Mag. as you may have guessed.

    The mag clips are marked clearly "222 magnum". The one I have is designated as a model "L469" as are others I have seen, not L46. The clips are different dimensions and will not interchange. My serial # is 46,xxx.
