Why do people seem to like the 22-250 over .243?
I have been looking for a varmint rifle and every time you ask for a recommendation you hear the praises of the 22-250. My question is, why don't more people recommend the 243. If you look at the ballistics of the 243 with a 55g bullet they are very similar to the 22-250 plus you get the added versatility of shooting larger bullets/larger game.

I've often wondered the same thing.
The 22-250 is a little faster and shoots a little flatter,but only the most discriminating shooter would be able to tell the difference.

Ignorance, that's why[:p] These same folks will recommend a .243 over a 6mm. 22-250 shoots very flat but loses energy pretty quick because of the light bullets, good for prairie dogs and such but I wouldn't use it on anything bigger

I believe if you look at both calibers with a 55g bullet, the 243 is faster and flatter. You have to use a smaller bullet with the 22-250 to get better ballistics.0 -
one possible advantage of the 250 is less chance of a ricchoet{sic} when that little bullet zipping along hits something it done for. of course the .22 cal bullets are cheaper for the reloader, and i must say the explosive power of the 250 is impressive on varmints.it wasnt long after it was chambered as standard factory cart. till the lesser .22 started to lose their following. i.e. hornet, bee, 222 rem. 0 -
Well see I perfer the .243 myself. I was planing on loading it up with 55 gr bullets but I havent had a chance to work up a load for it yet. As it is I have been using the same 100 gr loads I use in my hunting rifle. The hunting load I have are just a basic load from the book but I can shoot under 1 MOA with it. Also I have all the stuff arround to reload the .243 and nothing for the 22-250.

I guess it all depends on what you're planning on using it for. Personally, I don't need a gun that can shoot larger bullets/game. I already have a .308, .270 and .30-06 to handle anything larger that I need to shoot. I just want a small, fast and cheap to reload caliber to use on varmints and rabbits. For me, the .22-250 fits my needs perfectly...reload it with a 40 grain bullet and get around 4000 fps...works for me. Granted, if I wanted more versatility to shoot larger game, then I might consider the .243. Just my 2 cents. 0 -
I have nothing against the .243 for varmints. For the wretched ground squirrels that I primarily shoot, the 22-250 is perfect between 400-600 yards. Another plus for the 22-250 you have a broader type of varmint bullets to choose from. If I need a large varmint gun, my 25-06 is next in line.

i have got them both. the 243 with 55g has never been as consistant as the 22-250 when i reached way out with it (beyond 400 yds). we tinkered with many 243 loads/powders, etc. and just never got it there. on the other hand i have gone down to the sporting goods store and bought off the shelf winchester supremes for the 22-250 that performed excellent at that distance. might have been a little better comparison if the guns were the same kind, barrel length, etc. i like them both, but have more confidence, long range, with the 22-250.

Nothing against the .243; but needed something good for 150 yards out to 400 yards or so. My 22-250 fills that bill for me. Small varmits within 150 yards get killed by the .17 HMR; after that its the 22-250 for small varmits up to and including coyote.......... My 22-250 is an amazing prairie dog and coyote rig. I load 55-gr Nosler ballistic tips usually. Or V-Max. The advantage I see with a .243 is being able to load heavier (65 or 75-grain bullets)for longer shots or windier days. That being said, I'd rather have a 25-06 for that particular job.

i heard the 22-250 and the 25-06 barrels get burned out quicker. i prefer the 243
