Smith&Wesson date and model needed
I just acquired a Smith & Wesson 38spl. d.a. revolver with the serial# 708** S. It has a 6 1/2" barrel and is nickel plated (appears factory) and wood checkered S&W grips. It's in about 98% condition and I was just looking for help identifying and an approximate value.

I went through the S & W Book, the closest ones that I could find with a "S" suffix, rather then a prefix would be those 40,000 Victory Models that were sent back to S & W during the war for rework of the internal safety.
Take off the grips and see if there's a plugged hole for a lanyard ring. The Victory Models, came with them.

I removed the grips and don't see any plugged holes. However, the serial # under the grips starts wth the S as a prefix!!

Look on the frame under the yoke when it is swung out, and I think there will be a set of numbers such as"10-2" or the like. That will tell you the model number followed by the engineering variation. Having said that, I suppose I don't know for sure with the Victory models, but it's that way the the rest I've seen.

That narrows it down some. Right after the end of W W II, they made a series with a "S" prefix. Only problem according to the book, is that there was a (6) diget number after the "S", you show only (5) digets in your original post.
I imagine that if you can establish that your revolver is factory original?, i.e. barrel length and nickel plating. There would be collectors interest in it. They been out of production for almost 60 years now.0 -

the 6.5 bbl length has me confused, as far as i know that was never offered on a k-frame gun. the mod # inside the yoke was not added till post 1957 guns. the s after the serial could indicate a return to factory for repair or refinish.does the the gun have a shrouded extractor rod as per magnum guns?? my guess is its an n-frame.yes factory letters are available. 0 -

Yes, it does have a shrouded ejector rod. The guy I got it from called it an "HD 38spl." (heavy duty) he claimed it was from 1946. It is a large frame like a magnum.

your gun is a post war 38-44 hd if it has fixed sights, if adjustable it`s the outdoorsman. nice gun and not too many were produced. the 6.5 bbl length and nickle finish will add to value. 0
