Remington Model 522 Speedmaster????
Does anyone have any experience with the Speedmaster? I have been thinking about buying one and just wanted to get some opinions on it. Are they pretty accurate/reliable? It is $369 new at a local shop. Real nice gloss walnut stock. It is a nice looking gun, I just wonder how it performs. Any feedback appreciated.

this gun is a great gun dont put a scope on it as the barrel is loose in the reciever but with open sites it is the greatest thing I have carried one since 87 and a 10 wheeler wouldnt haul the game it has brought home. dropped it in a frozen creek one time had to smack it against a tree for a while before I could shoot the coon I had treed take it apart once a year and clean it weather it needs it or not I have 4 of these and 4 sons and a cabelas speedloader and all I do is load on the line for the little ones they never fail no matter how dirty they are I thought I gave to much for mine then but I liked the 700 rifle sites it had it is the deluxe model althought you cant tell it now good luck this is the perfect 22 rifle to carry I endorse it fully and my name is Meat

You will be hard pressed to find anyone that will say anything negative about a 552...a 597 is a different story though.
I have a 1990 BDL that is extremely accurate and reliable. You can go 300-400 rounds without any problems, then once it's gunked up all you do is pop out the 2 pins, pull the action, spray out the action and bolt, put it back together, and start having fun. I've never taken it down more than that.
I bought it used for $150 a couple of years ago. Near perfect condition. My son is left eye dominant, so the shell deflector made it an easy purchase. The stock is still a little long for him, but he will grow into it.
Williams makes an FP receiver sight for the 552. It looks a little "blocky", but I would put it on before a scope.
Buy it...great value, accurate, trouble free, semi-auto rimfire.0 -
I have both a 552BDL and a 572BDL, they are almost a matched pair as far as wood and finish goes. Both are excellent shooters and I have 4x fixed power scopes on both. I don't understand what MEAT396 means by "the barrel is loose in the reciever" as both the pump and the semi are fixed barrels in the reciever

A 552ADL was my first gun,and I still have it. It had a scope on it when it was given to me by my Grandpa (Simmons 4X). I still hunt with it and have never had any problems with it. Been shooting it for 25 years and never a jam,failure to feed/extract or anything. Also no problem with the scope,I don't know what these others are talking about. If it doesn't have to be new,look around at pawn/gun shops or a show. You can get a nice used BDL for around $200,less for the ADL.

I was a little bummed out when I read it is not reccomended to scope one because I love the pinpoint accuracy I get with a scope. I can shoot open sights as well as the next guy, but I have a scope on every gun I own except an old pellet gun. I am going to do some more research about this scope issue. Any feedback on what kind of 50 yd accuracy with a scope? I can fit just about all shots in a circle the size of a nickel at 50 yds with my other .22 rifles. I've bought a couple .22's that would not shoot that accurate and have always gotten rid of them. I am very picky about accuracy. If it can't shoot the nickel, its gone. Anyway, I really like the Speedmaster. I may just have to get it, scope it and see what happens. Thanks for the input.

I don't think we meant to say that a scope wouldn't work, but rather it wasn't needed. The iron sights are really good, but a Weaver or Leuopold 4x scope will definitely improve accuracy to your nickle size groups. Just find the right ammo.
It's going to be your rifle, so do as you please. When not if you buy it, you'll definitely consider it a keeper.0 -
I hope you mean a 552 and not a 522 Viper. The Viper is worth a hundred and an half new in the box and is a discontinued model. It wasn't a very good rifle.
Now the 552 Speedmaster is one of my favorite riflesz, I've got three. If you buy the BDL model it is built for a scope. The higher comb on the stock is perfect for a 22 scope. You can mix shorts, longs and long rifle ammo together and the rifle fires just fine. It holds 22 shorts (I think) and is a silent riot to shoot. All of my 550's and 552's are tack drivers.

RTG, I meant 552 Speedmaster.(not 522, my mistake) Anyway, I am going to get one soon and scope it. I guess the BDL is the high gloss model I looked at and the dull finish is the ADL?

There are only two differences in the BDL and ADL. BDL has checkering and nice "big rifle" type sights. The ADL has no checkering and regular .22 type sights. The ADL is no longer in production,but there are some nice used ones out there. If you are going to scope it I wouldn't pay the extra for the BDL unless you just want a brand new gun. 0 -
My 552 was my first "self-purchased" gun...way back when it was new for about $60 hard-earned mowing grass. It's still my favorite .22 rifle--very accurate. Scoped it once then ditched the scope. Have seen some nice used ones here on the GB now and then. Mine, too, is the ADL model. Simple, but effective. [^] 0
