Winchester 1892 Octogon barrel 25-20

I have a winchester 25-20 octogon barrel, year 1892 with browning instead of blue. In good condition except for a vice mark on the back of the barrel. Does anyopne know its value and what I would expect to list it for on this site?

I also have a Winchester 25-35 1892 in excellent condition.

    Hello dave I believe the 25/20 was blue when new but has faded to a brown looking finish the vise marks will hurt alot as this points to the barrel being non orginal to the gun. Is the inside of the bore bright or dark ? This gun would be a shooter not a collector I would say somewhere $350.00 up. I suspect the 25/35 is a model 94 as the action size of a model 92 is too short for 25/35. the 25/35 has been out of production for quite some time but with out pictures it would be hard to put a $$$$ on it.

    Hello Dave...

    I completely agree with perry shooter, and will add that your 25-20 W.C.F. is a Model 1892 that was manufactured no earlier than August of 1895 (the serial number will more closely determine when it was made).

    The Model 1892 was standard with a blued frame, though a few of them were special ordered with color case hardened frames (before 1908), and the barrels were ALWAYS blued. It is very very common for old bluing to turn brown (referred to as "patina").

    I suspect that your Model 1892 is not going to be worth more than $400 due to the vice mark and the brown coloration.

    The 25-35 W.C.F. Winchester is most definitely a Model 1894/94.

    On The barrel of the 25-20 has a trademark stamp with 1884 stamped.
    The vice mark is on the back of the barrel at the breach and receiver.
    It is the original barrel, this much I do know. The bid started at 500.00. If its only worth 400.00 why did I did bid up to 700.00 against gun dealers at this auction? ( I won) With that being said, do u know the value? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks! Dave


    10 years ago, the 25-35's value was then at $5000.

    Hi Trigger; Dont mean to butt in but these guys are usually correct. My Winchester book says 25/20 but no 25/35. I suggest you Call Cody museum and satisfy your your mind set.

    More than likely the reason the bid went to 700& is because you and the other people you were bidding against don't know anyhting about older Winchesters. BTW, Bert H. is the leading expert on here in regards to Winchesters. He truly knows his stuff.

    Hello Dave...

    The 1884 date (Oct. 14, 1884) you are referring to is the Patent date for a Model 1892.

    Model 1892s in the 25-20 W.C.F. caliber are the least desirable in the collectors market, and as such, unless they are Deluxe Sporting rifles, or have LOTS of special order options, or are in true Mint condition, they are not worth much more than $750. Because yours shows obvious signs of having been messed with (the vice marks), and the bluing has turned brown, it is not actually worth more than $400. Finally, for someone who appears to be a novice Winchester collector, how do you know that the barrel is original to the rifle[?] I personally would be very suspicous that it is NOT original ( there is never any reason to put a barrel in a vice except to remove it, and that only happens when the original barrel was damaged or no good).

    Winchester Model 1894/94s in 25-35 W.C.F. very very seldom are worth $5000. It would have to be a Special order Deluxe Sporting Rifle in very good condition to hit that $$$ mark.
