Blunderbuss
I WOULD LOVE SOME INFO FROM ANYONE WHO HAS ANY INFORMATION ON A GEORGE ALEP BLUNDERBUSS. ITS FRENCH I THINK AND IS 17.5 INCHES LONG AND VERY ORNATE. I KNOW NOTHIN ABOUT IT AND WOULD LOVE SOME HELP!

I have what I was told was an 18th century naval flintlock blunderbuss. Naval because there is no ramrod since it was loaded below deck and given to the sailors. The gun is 32" long with a 18 1/2" brass barrel. The barrel is half round and half octagonal. The muzzle is 2 1/2 diameter. The barrel interior is rough as though it was sand cast. The stock has no markings, a brass butt plate and the fore end has been replaced. The lock has two markings, a large rampant lion and a small crown(??) over a script "B". The previous owner said these were pre 1812 London proof marks. It's in good shape for its age (the previous owner had fired it- I won't).
Any opinion as to its history or value?

I would date it at 1800 plus/minus 10. English almost certainly, if so it should have proof and view marks on the barrel, Crown over intertwined GP and Crown over V, maybe crown over crossed scepters. It probably had a ramrod that was eliminated when the fore end was replaced. Looks like a job that was done with little study as to what it was originally. In excellent original condition it would price maybe $2000, 2500 but as-is maybe a quarter of third of that. 0
