Ithaca 900 question

I just picked up an Ithaca 900. I can load the magazine, but it does not cycle rounds. I tried to load one in the chamber first, and it still will not cycle a round. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a problem with the gun ??

  I asked around and believe it, or not, a friend said that he had the same problem with his I900 with light loads - when it was new. I've never heard of that before but he's a pretty sharp fella!
