.243 long range, best bullet size?

what do you think the best size bullet (in .243) is for long range competition and varmint. i read that the .243 win. cartridge was developed for 1000 yard comp. im thinking somewhere around a 100-110 grain bullet??

    I have been using 243 for Coues Whitetail deer in Arizona for years. A 90 pounder is huge. They are very very crafty and shots across the gullies are usually 400yds + so accuracy is all important. I use the Nosler 95 ballistic tip - but I like the 95 Combined Technologies just as well maybe better. I push them with H414 and always full length size just enough to easily chamber. 3 inch groups at 400 are the norm from my 6.5lb Browning Medallion.

    Andy, My personal preference for the .243 is the 95 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip. It shoots nice cloverleafs at 100 yds. I use 44 grains of H-4831SC. I have never shot any long distances with it (over 500 yds) I'm sure it would perform well at long distance, I just have not tried it. I have taken plenty of groundhogs at 250-300 yds with it. My gun is the Ruger Stainless M77 synthetic. It is one of the most accurate guns I own.

    how long should the barrel be? i was thinking around 26-28 inches. i saw some nice drag bags that fit a 26inch barrel max. but wouldnt a 28inch be more accurate? i'll prolly be shooting anywhere from 100-600 yards.

    243 is effecient - 24 inches is plenty and length has no relationship to accuracy what-so-ever.

    Kinda sweeping statement dont you think? Accuracy depends on a host of variables. For instance how fast the powder you select burns. if you want a slower burning powder, you'd want a longer barrel. Rate of twist is also a factor that could bear on barrel length. I agree that 24" is plenty for a 243 for most loads. Also it's not necessarily the weight of the bullet you choose that determines accuracy, it's length is also a factor. Some say bullet length is THE determining factor.
