45 Colt Ctg.

I have aquired a S & W 25-5. Stamped on the right side of the barrel is .45 Colt Ctg. Is this the 45 Long Colt?

    No such cartridge as the 45 Long Colt. There is the 45 Colt and the 45 ACP. Your's is for the 45 Colt.

    Don if it was made after 1957, the 25 that was made for the 45 ACP was called the 25-2. Does it have the recessed cylinder for the rim of the 45 Colt or 45 Auto-Rim, or is it a flush cylinder where you could use the Moon Clips for the 45 ACP?

    If it says .45 Colt Ctg. it is for the .45 Colt, not ACP. 45 Long Colt is what some people mistakenly call .45 Colt but its actually incorrect. There is really no such thing as .45 Long Colt, its just .45 Colt.

    .45 Auto Rim is a rimmed version of the .45ACP.

    During WWI, the U.S. need for sidearms was greater than the manufacturers of the M1911 (Colt, Remington-UMC, and the (real) Springfield Armory) could supply, so the Gov't contracted with Colt and Smith & Wesson to manufacture their large frame revolvers in .45ACP (with half-moon clips). These were issued as the Colt & S&W M1917s.

    After the war, ammunition manufacturers brought out the .45 Auto Rim so that owners of these surplus revolvers could do away with the half-moon clips.

    Some people refer to .45 Colt as .45 "Long" Colt simply to differentiate it from it's shorter cousin, the .45 ACP.

    Hey Mike.....there was also the .45 Gov't. Halfway between the Schofield and .45 Colt. [:D]
