S&W Model 29-2 Value

I've been wanting to add a nice mint condition 6-1/2" blue S&W 29-2 to my collection. I watch for them and there seem to be many more 8-3/8 inch available at more reasonable prices. The 6-1/2 inch models appear every now and then.

I have also found another in about the same 99% condition on one of the other auction sites and the guy wants $1000.00 for it. Seems a little high on both of these being that there were supposedly many of these manufactured during the "Dirty Harry" craze. I've heard more than once about the tremendous backorder during that time period.

Was hoping some of you dealers or experts can give me some insite as to why I don't see as many 6-1/2 inch models and why the prices seem so high.

    Just like everything else.. supply and demand. I purchased mine in 1979. Walked in a gunstore and there it was !! I had a .41 mag model 57 in prestine condition that I traded for and didn't have much $$$ in. Dealer had tons of .44's in 4" and 8 3/8 and one 6 1/2 blue. Of course I wanted the 6 1/2. He traded me for $20. I still have it. These guns will stay high priced cause of the pinned barrel and recessed cylinders as well as the discontinued 6 1/2 barrel. My shooter a 29-3 10 1/2 has a straight cylinder.

    I understand the supply and demand price figures. I guess they didn't make near as many in 6-1/2 inch as I thought.

    Does anyone know what year of manufacture the serial number N322222 on this gunbroker auction would be?

    Should be a late 1975 or early 1976 manufacture.
