Followup to Carlos Hathcock question

Out of curiousity, what exactly is a "confirmed" kill?

I mean, who confirms it, and apart from bragging rights, does it actually mean anything?

Officially witnessed and confirmed by fellow Marines or one of his "spotters". It's like pilots who could only claim a "kill" if one of their fellow pilots actually signed witness to shooting down a plane although there have been more unofficial kills. There's no doubt by anyone that Hatchcock made more kills than were confirmed.

As far as what it means to have "confirmed" kills: to a pilot, it could elevate him to the status of "ACE", which would earn him the Distinguished Flying Cross, fame, possibly fortune, and the admiration of all. In Gunny Hatchcock's case, it simply meant he was doing his job as a Marine.

Incidentally, I personally know one of Gunny's "spotter scouts" (he usually had three with him on a mission). He told me they used to make bets on which target Gunny would take out first or if he would hit his intended target at all. My friend lost a lot of money on the bets. His biggest loss was a 1,000 yard shot - (he made the mistake of betting against Gunny). Hathcock dispatched his target squarely in the forehead - "One shot, one kill".

I actually met Carlos Hathcock at the Dixie Classic gunshow in Richmond VA. He was signing books and just hanging out telling stories to people. He was in a wheelchair and was chain smoking. I guess that was about 8 years ago. His favorite gun for long range sniping was the .300 WinMag bolt action. He was wearing his hat with the famous "White Feather" in it.
