Winchester tool?

I found an old tool of some sort,only markings are Winchester on one side,other side has U.S.PAT.2-28-11,no other markings.Its rectangular about 3'' long,by 1''x1'' square on ends.2 knurled knobs that are on 2 movable round rods that pass back and forth through the block.All machined surfaces around the outside.Any ideas...Mike

  Did a brief search and came up with Winchester Butt Gauge. Know nothing more about it.

  how far apart are the rods from each other?

  It could be any kind of tool, not necessarily gun-related. Winchester was a supplier of everything from hammers and screwdirvers to flashlights, pocket knives etc. Around the turn of the century Wichester licensed its name to use on lots of products made by other suppliers.

  After WWI Winchester found itself with massive production facilities and no war to demand thir supply; so they diversified and made all manner of products, primarily hardware stuff; then they went TU in the Depression. When John Olin bought Winchester, the non-gun production was curtailed.

  The rods are about 1/4'' dia.,verticle to the machined sides abount 3/4'' apart with points.A layout marker makes sense,a carpenter friend thought maybe for marking hinges on new door jambs.Anyone have any ideas as to value.Also thanks to all for the ideas....Mike
