Double rifle accuracy?????
I read a post a few weeks ago, someone was asking about double rifles. I read in this months Heartland issue that Spartan is now selling a break action boxlock double rifle in 30-06 and .45-70 for around $500. I'd say this is a bargain compared to what I have seen a lot of doubles listed for. I personally do not have a lot of interest in getting a double, but I am curious about the accuracy. I read that on a double barrel shotgun (side by side or O/U) the pattern will cross at around 40 yds. How would it work with a double rifle? The Spartan comes with a scope rail, so if you scoped it, would it print both barrels close? It seems like it would severely handicap the range on the 06, but it would probably be OK for close ranges(.45-70)Any body got some insight on this?

Hello double rifles are REGULATED to print in the same place with both barrels . HOWEVER this is good for one distance and with one load with one weight of bullet . all others will be off between POI for each barrel . Most double rifles are used on large dangerous game at short ranges where a 6 inch group is good enough. The one thing I like about a VALMET 412 double rifle Is you the shooter can adjust the POI between the 2 barrels. 0 -
As perry said. they are regulated for a certain distance. If these are the Baikal made ( I think I heard that), earlier ones were made with a screw to change regulation of the barrelsor at least in reference with each other. I do not know if it works in this case nor how well. 0 -
I heard from the owner of a drilling that because of uneven cooling,
barrels will warp and POI will drift. For the one or two shots in hunting it's not an issue.
A light 30-30 or 35 Remington on a 28 or 410 gauge double frame would be nice to own whether I needed one or not.0 -
I can't say anything about accuracy in double rifles but I think it would be pretty coool to own one....just because. They could be a good 'by the door gun' for ya if you have varmints etc. around the place.

The Baiklal and valmets that you are talking about can be fitted with double rifle but a true double rifle as you know it is side by side. I really dont know what kind of quality you can expect for $500. These true safari rifles usually came in large cal. for dangerous game and were precisely zero'd and then the barells were soldered together. these guns start out at around $7500 and go wwwaaaay up from there. Great for an african safari,but for north american white tail ? 0 -
Savage and valmet both make a combination rifle/shotgun in various calibers. You may want to start there. the .223 20ga. has always been a favorite of mine. You can always load the shotgun with a sabot and have 2 diff. cal. rifles..now, both hitting the same bullseye is different. 0 -

As it has been pointed out, doubles were (are) regulated, first by the maker when the barrels are temporarily joined and tested and then by the owner as the loads are finalized. With classic doubles, the game was usually specified at the beginning and the bullets and velocity were basically a given. It isn't like shooting bolt rifles as we do today where we have a hundred bullets to choose from in combination with 30 or more powders. The selections were narrow. Regulation generally took place between 50 meters (54.5 yds) and 80 meters (87.5 yds) and it could be specified by the person paying the bill.
The tricky part comes when you want to regulate two different bullets such as a soft point and solid. Tough duty! It can be really fascinating if you like reloading and testing. Use this link for another forum that somewhat specializes in Big Bores and Doubles:

A gun maker I used to know regulates his double rifles to the same point of impact at 100 yds.

As has been said previously the zero will be for one specific range and according to the web site the rifles have adjustable barrel regulation. A double 45-70 would be a good wild hog rifle.[:D]

Good double rifles can shoot quite well especially considering their intended use. i have a pre-WW1 London gun in 450/400 regulated at 100 yds which will still be in the effective use size at 200. With the right load I have managed to wobble two rights and two lefts into 2-1/2 inches at 100 using the express sights. 0
