BEST home defense gun????

OK, William81 got me thinking and my vote for the best home defense gun is a sawed off double barell 12 ga. with a pistol grip. It is quick and easy to manuever and fairly easily concealed at home. the sawed off bbl. allows a wide open choke and a double barell is easy to use in a panic situation. hopefully, the situation never arises but that is my weapon of choice in a pinch. Yours?

    Not that I would ever consider such a thing as a cut-down, maybe a friend of mine would,so...I am curious....isn't there an over-all length specified, in addition to the 18" bbl. ?

    Shotguns are always a good choice as you have a nice club after the ammo is gone.[;)]

    I personaly prefer a Mossberg 590 for home defense also. I wouldn't saw a barrel off a shotgun though. But if you want a sawed off shotgun you can get the paper work from the ATF and a finguer print done by the FBI and pay a $200 tax. I think a factory legal 18" barrel is good enough. You can put a pistol grip on it to make it shorter. I have a folding stock on mine. Real easy to use in tight spots.

    A coach gun with a pistol grip does have a certain style about it that a pump could never match. However, we're talking about home defense, not style. I would find it reassuring to have more than two shots before I had to reload.

    Minimum shotgun bbl. length==18"

    Minimum overall length==26"

    Which means that if cutting down a break action shotgun,the bbl. will have to be longer than 18" in order to achieve the 26" overall minimum.

    So,if your gonna do it,cut the stock first!!! Then the bbl.

    You can get a Benelli M3 with a 14.5" barrel on a Class 3 if you can find one. Would make for a nice home defense shotgun, entry weapon, club, etc.

    i have the mossberg 590 under the bed. I also like to have more than 2 shots. 8 is nice.

    If it gets too short add a recoil pad (or spacer).

    Without trying to ruffle any feathers....I never thought of a shotgun as a good home defense weapon. Several reasons....If...and it's a very big if...you're going to sit and wait or hope the intruder comes to you they may be fine. However if you have to find him....and I have had to go looking....it is way to long in any form to suit me. Once you start to cross any doorway it is very easy to disarm someone carrying a long gun. A pistol can be held against your waist and still be shot with home defense accuracy. At closer ranges than you think a shotgun will throw pellets out of pattern. When using 4 shot and larger they will easily penetrate house walls so if everyone in the home isn't in the same place there is a danger there too. I much prefer handguns and have no trouble or worries when armed with one of my SAA's. Handguns do however rquire a tremendous amount of practice to become proficcient with and the simple truth is very few people spend half the time necessary to become good with one. And then there is the completely different matter of mental attitude.
