If the shotgun barrel is rifled, can it only shoot slugs?

    I'm hearing alot of folks say that the only thing you should shoot through a fully rifled shotgun barrels are sabot slugs and not the 1oz rifled slug, because they'll damage the rifling in the rifled barrel. I've always shot rifled slugs through my 870 and there has never been a problem. I've even killed deer at quite a distance with this combination. Can anyone set me straight here? Is it OK to shoot these 1oz slugs through these barrels?

    If it was my shotgun, I'd only shoot slugs through a rifled barrel. If I wanted to shoot shot with the same gun, I'd get a second barrel.

    I second. Shooting anything other than slugs or sabots are a big no no for rifled barrels. The forseeable exception, for me, would be if the gun was already inaccurate or you just didn't care about it for some other reason. Also, not only will shooting shot shell through mess up the rifleing, but it may also destroy your pattern thus causing more inaccuracy.[B)] BTW, safety wise, I believe it's perfectly fine, the barrel just won't last as good.

    Back in the 1960's Bill Atkinson of A.& M. Barrels in Prescott, Arizona designed and developed a Design for Rifling Shotgun Barrels..A Person could Shoot Slugs, Sabots or Shot thru the same barrel with No Problem in Accuracy or Shot Spread..

    It would be possible, but the rifling would tend to put a spin on the shot cup, and that would tend to mess up the shot pattern to some extent.
    The shot cup would certainly protect the rifling from any damage, but lead passing through steel, no matter in what shape will not harm it .......

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    yall havent seen the newer straight rifled shot gun barrels? there out there. its supposed to stabiliz the shot pattern better.

    Depends upon usage. Personally most rifled barrels are for deer hunters who think it nessisary, but i have found that smooth bore or improved cyld. are just as good. I took a deer out at 90 yards without a problem. Rifled might be a little more accurate but not for the money. But you are the holder of the pen and you probably should only shoot slugs designed for rifled barrels.

    mrbruce hit it right on the head, I have done it several times. However the shot cup, which by the way protects the rifling inside the barrel, spins and the shot pattern spreads fast and wide. Once the shot cup clears the end of the barrel, it begins to slow down drastically until it "falls off" the shot then the shot starts to spin outward, within a few feet to yards, you have a large pattern.

    works real well at about 10-15 yards.

    let me pose this question, What would be the diffrence between a shot cup and a plastic sabot going down the barrel??

    the shot as well as the lead sabot stay inside the plastic housing until it clears the barrel.

    It is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
