Triple, stacked-barrel pistol????

Was wondering if any of you guys could help me with a pistol identification? I don't have it here, so I am going from memory...

This pistol has three barrels stacked to form a single unit. The barrel unit slides up, off the frame to load. It is semi-automatic with each squeeze of the trigger a different firing pin is fired. The entire pistol is about five inches long and extremely light...the metal has the looks and feel of magnesium. The bores are big...about the size of a .410. Any idea what this thing is? It is at the father-in-laws in Idaho so I can't give you any markings or anything. Word has it that it came from Germany many years ago.

    From your description, I believe the pistol your describing is a post W W I German tear gas pistol. It was commonly known as a "Scheintod" pistol. They were made of potmetal, and commonly fired a 10mm cartridge. One of the manufacurers of the 3-barreled type you describe was August Menz of Suhl. Don't know if this was the manufacturer that made yours.

    Don't believe so. Sold commerically. Krauts were big on marking stuff that the police and military used. Never saw or heard of any these, with same. Your Father in Laws tear gas luancher isn't common. Their considered Firearms Curiosa, if its original and in good shape it MIGHT? be collectable.

    Thanks for all the information... My head can't wrap around the concept of this pistol...
    Someone robs you at knifepoint... You pull out your tear gas pistol and unload it; praying the criminal stands there until the tear gas takes affect???? No wonder they are rare![:D]
