I would like to know if the shiny, chrome-appearing finish on some pistols was originally bought as a nickel finish and polished to that point or purchased in that condition?

  The shiny finish "NICKEL" is a plateing and was useful to keep a gun from rusting under harsh conditions . It could be chrome like if the base metal was finished to a very high polish the plateing is thin and does not lend its self to polishing the nickel.

  Hello twrchief,
  Many firearms, usually of lower quality, were chrome plated.
  Higher quality firearms *may* receive a Ni finish. To acheive a fine
  finish on any arm, the base material must be highly polished.
  Ni would have been applied after a copper plate. Then followed by chrome and then buffed. While a Ni finish does help resist a foul
  enviorment, ss at ambient tempt is a more likely finish/base.
