Bolt locks open on my Rem 1100

But If Not
I have a Remington 1100 12 Guage semi-automatic shotgun. When I load the gun and then pull the bolt back and let go it should put a shell into battery but instead the bolt stays locked open. Does anyone have an idea as to why this is?

    Push the button on the bottom of the reciever. The one in front of the trigger guard.Watch your fingers.

    As I understand it, it should only lock open when empty. If there are shells in the tube and you pull the bolt back, it should automatically close - putting a shell into battery.

    Here's the drill: Open bolt-- press bolt release to close bolt on the empty chamber-- fill the mag. tube--pull bolt back--hit the bolt release again, to chamber a round--you can then top off the mag tube if desired.........( Instead of initially closing the bolt on the empty chamber, you can hand feed a round at this time, but then you are handling a gun with a loaded chamber......and don't forget the safety, first and foremost. )

    butifnot...that method only works when the gun senses its been fired. in other words, unless the trigger was pulled with the bolt closed, it will assume its still empty and not cycle. it will lock. it has to do with the trigger assy and op rods tripping inside the action. follow me?

    WELL YOU FELLAS HAVE GOT IT PARTLY RIGHT, THE CARRIER LATCH IS THE PARTS THAT ALLOWS THE BOLT TO RELEASE AND GO FORWARD, THIS IS 'TRIPPED' BY A SHELL FEEDING FROM THE MAGAZINE. IF YOU LOAD THE MAGAZINE AND PULL THE BOLT BACK AND RELEASE THE BOLT HANDLE FAST, THE BOLT WILL GO FORWARD AND LOAD THE FIRST SHELL. IF YOU PULL THE BOLT BACK AND STOP, THE CARRIER RELEASE WILL RESET AND THE BOLT WILL STAY BACK... UNTILL YOU HIT THE RELEASE BUTTON ON THE BOTTOL OF THE CARRIER. THIS IS NORMAL OPERATION.

    Thanks, Mike..I learn something everyday. I had to go play with my wife's 1100 for a while. Releasing the bolt handle quickly will chamber the first round, but only if you are starting with the hammer uncocked ( you've pulled the trigger on an empty chamber). Is that correct or is hers just finicky ?

    dang..youre making it complicated. [:)] its not that hard to walk with an open chamber with a shell laying in it. pop the release, it loads, and shoot. why are you set on having it in the tube and requiring the bolt to be cycled? seriously, im curious? [?]

    Truth is, Bob, that's exactly how I've always operated it on the rare occasion that I used it. Over examination of a percieved problem usually results in over complication of an unneeded solution. Guilty as charged..[:I]

    Thanks guys. I understand now. This is the first semi auto I ever met that acts this way. With my semi auto rifles (Ruger 10/22, M1A etc.) ya just yank the handle and off you go.
