savage 30.06 break in

I've read in a couple of forums that you should "break in" a new gun I recently purchased a savage 30.06 and want to know how to break in a rifle and why you break in a rifle.


any and all wisdom is helpful.

    The idea is to polish the bore with the friction created by the passing bullet. It is important to clean the entire rifel before shooting. I would remove it fromt eh stock and clean all of the metal parts. this will ensure that abrasives from manufacturing are gone.

    Next, Clean the bore from the chamber end. Use a good copper solvent and bore guide. The residue from the test firing will be removed by this. Then shoot 1 round and clean the bore. Do this for five rounds. Then shoot 2 and clean the bore. Do this 3 times. Then shoot five and clean the bore. Doing this for the first 50 rounds or so will insure that the bore is polished and will go a long way towards preventing future jacket build up.

    Some folks go a lot further, some a lot less. Whatever you decide is right for you is fine. The most important thing is to clean it before you shoot it for the first time.
