Value & info on Model 1865 Spencer Rifle
I have a Spencer Repeating Rifle, Patd March 6 1860, Manufd at Prov. R.I. by Burnside Rifle Co Model 1865. THe only other markings I can find are the numbers 4920 next to the hammer and a small "c" on the back of the trigger plate where it screws in. Where would I find a serial number if it had one? While I was able to find many similar rifles, I saw no exact match for this one so would anyone have a ball park value? It has been used, and shows some scratches and initals on the wood, the metal is clean and in good working order. I am trying to research this gun so I can put it up for sale here but am finding confusing info. I found a statement which said Burnside made 34,000 of these and another said 23,000. A gun collector once told me this gun had only about 1,000 made so it was very rare but I am finding nothing to support this. Can anyone help?
Many thanks,
Lisa

Get hold of a copy of "Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms". It's the standard reference for collectors of U.S. Firearms. Since it now in it's 8th Edition, there easy to come by used, or most libaries will have a copy in their reference section.
There is a section on Spencer Rifles and Carbines, that will answer your questions.
It would be best to have a knowledgeable collector and/or honest dealer, have a hands-on inspection to verify the originally/condition of your carbine/rifle? So that when you put it up for auction there won't be any misunderstandings.
