LLama auto's any good?
They sure look good in the pictures on GB. My local store doesn't have them so how about the 45 1911 copy or the 9mm, any good? reliable? quality? accurate? The price is sure right. My only aim is to poke holes in paper.

mb- Llama's quality has varied wildly over the years, and you will find conflicting opinions concerning their desirability. When I had a shop several years ago I refused to take them in trade. Guys would buy them new, become dissatisfied with the gun's reliability (constant jamming, parts breakage) and want to trade for a Colt, which I wouldn't do. I never knew anyone who owned one of their models who didn't have problems. Perhaps they're better now, but something to consider: you can always sell a Colt (or other major brand); a Llama will probably be yours forever. -Asa 0 -
I have heard a lot of negative things about the Llama pistols on this forum, HOWEVER, I had one years ago and it was a reliable, accurate gun. It was a 1911 clone with a duo-tone finish. I think it had a nickel slide and a blued frame. anyway, the gun shot great and was fairly accurate. The only reason I sold it was to get the Ruger P90.

I shot a nickle 40s&w Llama 1911 copy that came in on trade. Slide locked open midway through the magazine on both magazines. This is my only experience shooting them and I would not recommend them. However I hear Llama actually has some following. A friend of mine has an older 45 that has had no problems.
I do have a Rock Island Armory 1911 GI style 45 that I bought for myself this last Christmas. This gun has run flawless with almost 500rds of mixed styles HP and FMJ ammo that I have put through it. The sights are tiny and there is some hammer bite but the function and accuracy is great. I must admit I experienced one failure to feed but that happened during shooting 150rds of dirty Wolf ammo just recently. This gun has been 100% will all other brass cased ammo.
If you are looking for a cheapie 1911 I would check out the Rock Island. If you have a little more money look at the Springfield Armory GI Milspec which also a nice low priced GI style 1911.

Just hope you never have to get warranty service work done on it! Figure about four months turn around time from the "warranty" center, which I believe to be some guy in Alabama working in his garage.

I owned one years ago in .45 acp. The metal was very soft and the sear wore to the point that it would not stay cocked.
A friend had one in (I think) .380 and it had a crack in frame where slide lock hole is located.
I stoned the .45 sear and shot it for a while before finally trading it. Reasonably accurate and fed well.

I just bought a Mini Max .45 Sub Compact. Jammed at least once per clip and locked up tight mid extraction on the 97th round I put through it. I sent it in to the Warranty Gunsmith (In Alabama) and the warranty work was done in less than seven business days. Hopefully it is reliable now, but I haven't had a chance to shoot it since it got back. Was not very accurate, but is also a Sub Compact so that is to be expected. If all you want to do is target shoot with it, and you are a fairly patient person, Llamas are a bargain if you get one NIB with the lifetime warranty. But expect to have to send it to the warranty Gunsmith to have the kinks worked out. Especially look for problems with the feed ramp. Seems to be the most common problem with Llama. But if you just want to target shoot, and you don't mind dealing with initial problems, Llamas are definitely priced right . I WOULD NOT trust it for carry or home defense. 0 -
I have one (A "Government Model" .45 ACP that is a clone of the Model 1911) that I have owned and shot for 12 years... it has functioned flawlessly, is very accurate, and has never jammed on me regardless of what ammo type I fed it, and I have over 10,000 rounds through it. Based on my one experience with a Llama, I have absolutely no complaints, and would buy one again if needed.

You may get lucky, but there are enough 'bad' experiences to ward you off.
Save your money a little longer, buy a good used gun in good shape or save money a little longer and buy a new Springfield GI-Issue type.
If you just want an auto, and don't want to spend much, consider one of the mil-surp CZ-52's. I picked one up from a friend at the range for $80.00. It had little to no wear from use, shoots fairly cheap ammo quite well. 300 rounds with no failures. I don't know why I did it, but I'm glad I did. You see plenty here on GB.0 -
