Barrel Life, A Few Questions-more specific
What would you say the typical barrel life would be on say a 7mm Mag (one of mine)? Nothing exotic just a plain old stock rifle or pistol. I've been told velocity wears them out. How does the moly coat affect this ?Better I would assume. What things can be done to extend this ?

Peek of accuracy, reasonable accuracy, or good enough accuracy?
One rule of thumb (for reasonable accuracy) is 40-45 pounds of powder through the barrel before replacment is needed.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

This is one of those questions that can generate dozens of opinions as answers and all will be correct or nearly so because there isn't an absolute quantifiable answer. Example; I have a varmint rifle chambered for the 22 PPC which currently has about 7,000 rounds through the barrel and it still shoots in the .3's consistantly. I watched a friend shoot out a brand new .243 Win. barrel completely in 3 days of shooting in a prairie dog field. I know because I borescoped the barrel when he noticed that it wouldn't hold a group when we got back, even after a thorough cleaning. He had fired all of his ammunition that he had loaded for this trip, 800 rounds, in 3 days, long strings of fire without breaks for cooling and only cleaned 3 times. It was ruined.
Speed is a scalar quantity which refers to "how fast an object is moving."
Velocity is a vector quantity which refers to "the rate at which an object changes its position."
Velocity doesn't wear barrels out. It's the factors that produce the velocity that hurts a barrel. Soft copper clad bullets, of their own volition, don't wear out barrels because they are softer than the barrel steel. It is the pressure, heat and the plasma produced when we ignite the propellant in the cartridge case that causes the damage to your barrel. It's like a high pressure blow torch going down your barrel behind the bullet. It heats the barrel and successive shots wear the now softer heated metal of the barrel faster. This is why shooters are always told to fire at a moderate rate and to let the barrel cool. Esoteric variables such as the shoulder angle of a case and the length of the neck can increase or decrease the damage to a barrel by the way they control the plasma.
Certain types of powder are more likely to increase the wear on barrels also. When burning, the long stick powders create a scouring action in your barrel. Even the newer shorter stick powders, the so-called "high energy" powders, don't get that energy without some form of payment. They increase the wear on your barrel from the higher temperatures at which they operate.
Barrel life can be affected by something so simple as improper cleaning methods such as letting the bore brush exit the muzzle and then dragging it back through the muzzle. This puts a radius on the edge of the muzzle ruining accuracy, therefore barrel life. Scrubbing the throat area of the bore will shorten barrel life as well for the same reason. Cleaning rods damage barrels through improper use also.
Lump all this together and what comes out? Barrels wear out at different rates even when similar barrels are compared. It all depends. Most barrels on hunting rifles will outlast you and possibly your children if handled with common sense and some care. I'm shooting some rifles that are 100+ years old and they are still superb. But, they have been well cared for correctly. I will eventually pass these rifles on to others that will continue that same type of care and who knows how long they might last.
