Bad hunt ???
I recently went a really bad hog hunt in Texas Was scammed from the beginning. Any suggestions on what to do other than take my medicine. How can I warn other hunters?

Bruce, that is sad but not at all uncommon. I was shown pictures of 30-40 mule deer bucks in a bunch and all the blah blah blah stories of huge trophies when I booked my WY hunt this year, last year. So when I get there, the drought (supposedly) had them all in the high timber for moisture and vegetation. Also,,I was NEVER told that unlike the east coast where I hunt, they have seasons for different parts of the state, so I was not able to go to the high timber farms. One guide who shared a love of custom rifles and long range shooting was kind enough to tell me when to book my next hunt so he could carry me into the timber. Needless to say I saw 1 (yeah that is right, ONE) deer that was worthy of my bullet. He was needless to say toting the mail by the time I jumped from the truck and I never got a shot off. The antelope was what I left with and shot a spike mulie just to shoot one as I had 5 minutes left in my 5 day hunt. I had $5000 rapped up in that deal when all was said and done. I doubt the BBB will provide any help as providing game is a chance type of deal and the land was what was rented, not the animals.
Check references before, but they don't list anyone but those who shot trophies, so what do you think that will prove?? It seems to me to be, from everone I have talked to, to be a roll of the dice. BUT, if a texas hunt could not show you a decent pig, then I would take issue with that as they seem to be like varmints everywhere out there. I would have requested some sort of concession if I never pulled the trigger.
I have since gotten with a pard who has family friends (rich family with rich friends) in Montana and he has gotten us a free trip with nothing but airfair and licenses next year or the year after. That is rare and I don't expect that to be my luck more than once in my lifetime. Buyer beware, it is a lesson learned the hard way, but unless we can buy our own 10,000 acres (small peice of land out there) then we are stuck with getting what we can. The only way to improve your odds is to get used to shooting 500yds so that distance can be turned into an advantage rather than a hindrance. My antelope was finally taken at 407yds, so it was no easy shot either.

sorry to hear that. i booked a elk trip earlier this year. i looked at several different places in different states. the places that wouldnt give me client references were immediately scratched from the list. otherwise, i called every reference i could, even if it was negative. unfortunately you can only learn from your mistakes [:(] (or really bad luck [;)]) best of luck in the future.

So do the rest of us a favor and list time dates and the SOBs who ripped you off. The best place to start is to get on line and tell all. Do not go off the edge and venture into the relm of libel or slander, just tell the facts and assume that most of us will be able to get your drift. 0 -

I got scammed on a deer hunting club 2 years ago in S. Carolina. I paid $500 to join, turned out the guy had permission for himself and son to hunt the land, but did not have permission to lease it out.
My only recourse was to sue him in small claims court. You do this in the county where he lives, not where the hunting misadventure was.
My brother is a lawyer and told me that I would get back the $500, plus $245 for licenses, and probably cost of two trips to hunt, 490 miles round trip at 30 cents a mile.
So I was going to sue him, when I got a letter from his lawyer that he had declared bankruptcy. There was no point to sue.
I did take some other means for payback but I won't go into that here.
So, if you are not too far away from where this con man resides, drive down and file a suit on him in small claims court, also called magistrate's court. You don't need a lawyer. Be sure to include cost of license and travel expenses. You can really cause the guy a lot of trouble, and you may get your money back.0 -
You shouldn't pay the kind of money you do to get skunked...but sometimes it happens and there seems to be little recourse. I don't expect trophies every time I go out, but at least seeing something shootable is expected. To me it's like showing up on any job without your tools or know-how that got you the job. Guiding requires both and it's reasonable that it should be provided or at least that something isn't the way it should be before you get there and plan B can go into effect.
I'd go with what Dakotashooter says...letting that States Fish and Game(DNR) know about him is the best way to get results. If they threaten to fine or revoke his license he will think twice about not giving what is paid for.

Hogs are funny animals.
We have more than enough on the ranch were i deer hunt and i went there a couple of weeks ago to help thin out some and we just did not see that many.
We took four of which i nailed two but we hunted for two days before we even saw any.
They dont like Texas heat and will move at night.

I saw no less than 500-750 of each animal (mulies and antelopes), but that does not mean they were worth shooting. Point being, they showed me all the game they promised, but none were a trophy in my mind (other than the antelope). We covered 200,000 acres in the northwest corner of Wy in the Black Hills, hunting 14hrs a day. I can say they didn't show me a trophy, and they can say they showed me more game in one week than I am likely to see in 10yrs here. That makes for a stalemate IMHO.

For the record there were 11 hunters and we hunted hard for 3 days and nights (mostly nights) and saw 1 pig. I have killed lots of hogs but what really steams me I had some friends from Wisconsion and Colorado come down on my recomendation and they got screwed on their first hog hunt. That's up in North Tx.
I had know idea that they had stinking hogs up there.
Sorry your hunt went so poorly and if they had hogs i would think you would have seen them at least at night time.
But again,they have a mind of their own.
This past hunting season we hardly even saw a hog at the South Tex. ranch i hunt on that is well known to have an abundant supply of the stinking hooved locusts.
But a month after the season ended the ranch worker killed nine in ONE day at various parts of the pasture.
Go figure.

We got all you can kill on our ranch in Waxahachie, Tx. I do wish I could kill'em all, meanies tear up the land so bad. But once you've got them they reproduce so fast you can never get rid of them. 0
