any AMT 22 auto mag experts out there?
years ago i shot a pleasent 22 auto mag over a friends range. the accuracy was surprising. it was the 6" bbl s/s version. so i did a search and found out that the gun came in so many variations it made my head spin. the 4.5 was interesting but for some reason the 6" proved itself accurate enough to please me. so, tell me, what were the bad things about this gun? whats its track record? what are the rarer ones out there? what are the best versions? tell all! thanks![?]

Arcadia Machine & Tool, effectively went out of business in the mid/late 90's when Harry Sanford passed away.
Most of their handguns were made out of stainless steel castings. The ones I've worked on in the past seemed to be on the "soft" side as compared to carbon steel.
The workmanship/final inspection was also problematical. I owned a couple that wouldn't work new out of the box, because of faulty workmanship, machineing operations not being done correctly etc.
The pistol you shot was the Automag II. If you buy one be sure to test fire it ( 100 rounds of different makes of ammo, using all the available magazines ) before handing over the Dinero. My 2?.

Hello BoBski If I can't say something nice I don't say anything about amt products I had 3 of their large bore auto mags and they were as soft as some of the cheaper SPANISH guns.Did you get the Woodsman match target.running ok? 0 -
One problem is the right side grip holds the trigger linkage in place. When the grip is worn down,the linkage no longer connects to the sear,the gun stops firing.Same design as the Jenning/Brycos.

Of the 6 or so AMT II's I have owned over the years, only one gave me any trouble. It had a problem when I first got it; the lug that was welded on the bottom of the barrel sheared off, letting the slide and spring come back at the shooter. Sent it back, got another barrel in 2 weeks, haven't had another problem.
The 6" is really accurate, surprisingly so; but with the right ammo.
AMT warns against using CCI ammo because it won't feed/extract, and I suspect that most of the horror stories about misfeeds and extraction are because of using CCI ammo.
The 3.5" model is perfect for pocket carry, little on the heavy side and the front sight might tear your chinos, but a handy little piece nonetheless.
The only real complaint I have about these guns is the multi-armed, watch-your-a$$ method of taking them down for cleaning. The recoil spring is very strong, and you have to hold the slide open the whole way while slipping something under the slide hold-open to pop it up so you can remove it. It's harder than it sounds.
Excellent target accuracy, superfast reloads, hard-hitting rimfire cartridge, innovative design of the chamber, many barrel lengths; what's not to like?
BTW, I saw a 2" version going back into a guy's pocket at a gun show once; haven't seen another like it!

The factory says the Auto Mag II has been tested with Winchester ammunition.
They say that CCI ammo with flake-type powder may not function in the Auto Mag. If you are using this ammo contact CCI and they'll replace it with ammo loaded with ball powder.
Most of these have feeding problems till they're smoothed up.
The magazines are hard to load without a tool to assist your fingers,- springs are pretty strong.
They're fun guns to shoot, accurate, too.
To get mine from me you'd have to pry it from my cold dead stiff fingers.0 -

I have one of those Jam-O-Matics that I wish I'd never purchased. When a round has been fired, the slide moves back, but not far enough for the spent round to be ejected, but far enough back so that when the slide moves forward it picks up a new round from the clip and JAM.
The ejector is positioned correctly, it has been very thoroughly cleaned, the little chamber holes are clean, have tried various ammo, have replaced the recoil spring.
The new High Stanard Co. is making the Automag again, but in 4" barrel only. Mine is the 6" barrel but many parts will interchange.
Didn't have a chance to test fire before purchase, certainly never would have bought it if I had test fired.0 -
sounds like ole al arenstein is up to his tricks trying to make a buck off of someones mistake(amt) why in the world would he put such a good name on a gun that has known problems is beyond me? hope he fixes it. if it has a hi std name on it should be, or else its a low standard![;)] 0
