Winchester M70 vs. Rem M700 actions

Ok; It seems that the guys in the know on this Board prefer the Rem 700 action over the Winchester M70 action for building high accuracy precision guns.

Now tell me Why? What is the difference that gives the Rem 700 the edge?

    Maybe most do, and I can't say that I am good enough to build a gun around an action yet, but my model 70 Sporter in 6.5, and the model 70 Featherlight (same caliber) were two of the most accurate rifles I have EVER fired.

    I beleive it boils down to ease of machining/trueing and simplicity of design. The actions are strong, rigid, and easily squared to make for much more consistent shooters. I like the factory trigger design better than most other types of rifle as well. It is simply a strong and easy action to work with, but a gunsmith could better describe just how/why it takes less time and effort to true up the rem700. They are also one of the rifles having a faster lock time.



    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    I have read in a couple of different magazines that the 700 is more accurate because it completely surrounds the base of the case. This supposedly means more consistent cartridge alignment. The Model 70 is not completely enclosed due to the controlled feeding. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. I do know that the sniper weapons in the military are mainly based on the 700 and that is good enough for me. I have several family members that have 70s and they love them. Every one is accurate with handloads (we all reload so factory ammo experience is minimal). Really the only inaccurate firearm I've owned is a Ruger 77 MKII. I was luckey to get 4" groups. Would I buy a 70? Absolutely! The choice between the two somes down to personal preference. IMHO one is as good as the other.

    The Rem 700 is a tubular receiver design. As I understand it this means that it can be locked up in a lathe and re-worked to achieve better then factory tolerances and alignment. I have read adds where they offer parts to take up excess play and tighten up the overall action to make it a real tack driver. The Win M70 is a forged design akin to the M98 Mauser and is much more complicated to work on. But, unless you are really going to go with one of the master gunsmiths who specialize in varmint or sniper rifles it is unlikely that you will see a major difference between the three actions. The Rem 700, the M70 Winchester and the Mauser 98 are three of the all time greats.

    How does the Howa 1500 stack up against the Win.70 and or the Rem.700? I understand that it is based on the basic design of the Rem.700 is this true?
