.40 S&W vs .45 ACP
I was arguing the other day with a friend over the merits of these two rounds in a self defense, combat or LEO capacity exclusively. He insists that the .45 is the ultimate pistol caliber for the above situations, I claim the .40 is superior. He's a 1911 shooter, I prefer my XD-40. We both agreed that they're both fine and realize that personal preferences and, especially, shot placement are more important. I think more ammo and generally higher velocity and energy, excluding custom reloads, make the .40 superior.
Am I full of it? I am, but I don't think so on this issue.

The .45ACP is the best round ever developed on the earth for a pistol. It is superior in every respect to any other round for defence, target shooting and plinking. End of Story; end of discussion. The .45ACP has ruled for the last century. It will rule into the next and the one after that. The 1911 pistol is also perfect, any other pistol is just a wanna-be. [:D][;)][:D][:0]

That is like asking if you would rather have your finger smashed with a sledge hammer or a splitting maul. Same results, different package.

I 3rd Bpost, 40S&W is the compromise cartidge. Better than 9mm worse than 45acp. Also know as 40 short and weak, at least around here.

.40S&W is a great cartridge out of a 1911. The gun weight cuts the recoil.
.45ACP is great, too. A different kind of greatness. "Final Word" greatness.

The "better" round is whichever one you can hit with better, since that's far more important than all the other caliber rubbish gun-nuts love to argue about.
The .40 has the advantage of more rounds in the gun, which could be a significant one if you think you might get into a situation where you might need to shoot more than 7.
The .45 has a *slightly* (and I emphasize slight, maybe a few percent) statistically better stopping track record, WITH THE BEST AVAILABLE LOADS. Despite the mythology, ordinary hardball .45 ammo is a relatively poor stopper, not really more effective than .38+P ammo or (gasp!) even stock 9mm!
Some people like the *gun* the .45s come out of better, which by itself could make it a better choice (see principle #1 above). If the gun is comfy and easy to use, and you'll hit with it, that's the gun you want.
And of course you didn't ask, but the .357 is a better stopper than even the .45 (or the .40 or any other pistol round), and the gun itself is more intrinsically reliable.0 -
How many rounds are in your .40? I have 13 .45 rounds ready to go. Gotta love Para, .45 power with a high cap mag. Its a beautiful thing. 0
