Question about Buying a Gun

I was wondering what the rules are for buying a handgun from a friend. Is there some paperwork that has to be filed out to transfer the registration or how does it work. If it is not a requirement, then what can be done to make sure I get registered for it. Thanks guys

    At the Federal level there is no paperwork involved as long as your friend is a resident of the same State as you.

    I would just buy it
    If not then maybe you should get it
    checked at local PD

    I live in MS right now, however, Im a resident of Texas. I cannot buy a gun from a store here because Im not a state resident. However, I figured I could buy one from a friend.

    Since Im (out of state) am buying it from my friend, would the gunb still be legally binding to him?

    Federal law prohibits a transfer of a firearm between unlicensed individuals UNLESS they are both residents of the same state. Some operate under the premise that "Catching comes before hanging." but I think it would be wise to conduct your gun transfers in compliance with the federal regulations. Let's assume you take the gun to a police agency and have them run an NCIC check on it. They get a "hit" that is is listed as stolen. They confiscate it and ask where you got it. You tell them from a friend. They learn the friend is a resident of MS (I am assuming this.) and call in the BATFE. From this point it will be unpleasant for you.

    Thank you for the input. Him selling it to me a couple of years ago wouldnt matter because ive always been a resident of Texas and he has always been on of MS.

    Just a further question, How does this work when you are a part year resident in 2 states. Which residency do you go by?

    In most cases, you are a resident of the state shown on your drivers license. You can change state of residence, but you cannot be a resident of > 1 state.

    Lonestar, I have a correction to Herschel's statement: Federal law permits a sale of a firearm between unlicensed residents of a state ONLY if state/local law permit such a transfer. Many states DO restrict the transfer of certain guns.

    I'm sure that you can find the same gun that you want in TX. Is it worth 5 years in Federal prison, just to save $50 or $100 on a gun? Think about it.

    True, just trying to save driving 12 hours each way. But any threat of getting in trouble over it is not worth it. Since I've never purchased a gun before, how long should i expect it take see my record is clean. Ive heard stories about a couple of days. Thanks everyone, Im looking into that Taurus
