Help me choose a 1911

Hey folks. Since I got a little graduation money I was helping you all could help me spend it. Looking at a new 1911 and I've narrowed it down to 3 choices.

Springfield 'Loaded'
Dan Wesson Pointman
Kimber Custom II

I want to use it mostly for plinking and home def, but I have also decided to try out some competition shooting (and there's no way I can spring for a Caspian, Les Baer, Wilson, etc). I'm hoping to keep it in the $650 and under range so any advice is appreciated

    All of those mentioned may be a bit hard to find at or below $650.00 at least new. Kimber makes a good gun but they only ship one mag. with each gun. Have you considered the S&W 1911. It gives up absolutely noting to the Kimbers and Springfields. It comes with two 8 round Wilsons! I have one of the early ones and I'm a very happy customer. You also can't go wrong with a Springfield but again price may stand in your way unless you are willing to look at their 'vintage' models.

    Seriously I would look at the S&W. You know the rep. they have for wheelguns (of which I own quite a few) it is present in their autos as well. And their customer service is really hard to beat.

    I prefer Kimber but also like Springfield, Dan Wesson, & Smith & Wesson. I don't own a DW but have handled them and have been very impressed. Smith and Wesson 1911's are nice too. Looking on here looks like you could get a S&W for just under $650.

    I personally picked up a used Kimber Classic Stainless a few years ago and have been very happy.

    Well the reason that i picked these three is that the sportmans warehouse in the area has both the spingfield and the kimber right in that price range and another local store has the pointman right at 600. so, i know that they are around, but dropping 650 still makes me want to make sure i'm getting the right one!

    I don't think you can make a big mistake in any of the three.
    My most recent 1911 was from Springfield with a bbl upgrade, the usual 'custom' chamfers/flairs/etc., and came in around 600 before taxes etc. I have never had a problem with the 8 round McCormick mags that are standard length. The Wilson mags are great, but are a little longer and pricier.

    Hey, a piggyback question here... I am in the same kind of boat as Chadyck. I am looking to spend about $700 and I want the same out of a 1911 (home defense and plinking mostly). I am not that handy in the "gunsmith shop" (my garage) yet, so please include reliability in your comments. I have read many reviews where a guy buys a 1911 and ends up having to tweak it for months before it stops stovepiping, trigger grinding, etc. I expect putting a little work into a 1911 but I want to spend more time on the range than in the vice.

    I could give you my choice but that is purely subjective. If you go to the dealers you mentioned and do not ask for a recommendation...just handle the guns I'm sure that one will stand out above the rest. One Smith may function better than one Springfield or one Kimber or one Dan Wesson. That can be said for any of them. All will function well enough for the purpose you specified...home defense and plinking. I have a Springfield and a Kimber Classic (not classic II) both with internal extractors. They are both perfectly reliable and are great to look at and fun to shoot. But they don't like the same ammo. I always expect to spend the money for several boxes, first for break-in, then for accuracy testing. Good luck and enjoy whatever 1911 trips your own trigger.
