lefty needs advice
I am a lefty looking for a cheap 308 varmint gun (three boys = no money for dad to buy a gun). I have been thinking about a Savage 12FLV. Any recommendations?

one of my buds called me today and told me he just took his new savage heavy barrel 22-250 out to finally shoot it. His second 5 shot string resulted in a one hole group with hornady factory ammo. If money is an issue, go with the savage and don't look back. Unless it had some super critical factory flaw, i am betting you will more than pleased.
My savage 10ML smokeless muzzleloader has given me 3 shot groups under 1" at 100yds with very little experimentation. The Savage button rifled barrels have proven themselves to be one of the best out of the box barrels on the market, and the price makes it even that much more agreeable.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

I had an old left handed Savage 110CL-D in .243 Win that shot sub 1" groups consistently @100 yds. It looked like it was made by the Mattel Toy Co.. but it sure was accurate and reasonably priced. I'll bet any of the current Savage models will fit the bill for you. Why a varmint rifle in .308 Win.? Aside from the recoil, even if you reload, .308 is not cheap to shoot and 30 caliber is gross overkill for varmints. Everyone will agree the .223 is by far the cheapest to shoot [both softpoint & FMJ]. If you plan to reload the .22-250 would be a better choice for more energy and range [i.e. more bang for the buck]. Should you want to hunt larger game the .243 Win works great as a low recoil long range varmint rifle and for light Deer as well. 0 -
Well, my reason for the 308 is that Savage doesnt offer a .243 in their left handed model 12's. And when I am lucky enough to draw a tag I deer hunt in Kansas and that would be a gun that I could take up there. Also the majority of the varmints I hunt here in Arkansas are cyots, so I dont necessarily think it is over kill. But thanks for your input. 0 -

I have never been a huge fan of Savage rifles, but I can tell you that for the price you will most likely get a quality and accurate rifle. Lately, I have heard nothing but good things about them so I would say you can buy with confidence. As for Savage not making the .243 in a model 12, that simply baffles me. I was going to purchase a .243 in a Savage for basically the same things you are and because of that went with a Ruger I found a good deal on. In my opinion a .308 is a great choice if your main game is deer and coyote. If you reload or even if you purchase your ammo, just make sure to use a fmj bullet to due less damage to the pelt of coyotes. I have used this combination on coyotes the last 2 years and have had great results!!

Being a lefty myself, since you are using it for varmint is a quick followup shot really required? If not, any action should work. My hunting rifles are left handed, but for target and long range varmint shooting, many of my rifles have right handed actions as speed for a followup shot is not a requirement. 0 -
Actually I have never even shot a left handed rifle. I have always shot right handed ones or single shots. I had an encore but....I hate to admit this...I ran over it. It never shot very good so I sold it. (wonder why!) Are the single shots (encore, ruger #1) as acurrate as a hevy barreled bolt?

Go with the Savage . I have owned several and have never had a problem with any of them. the new acu-trigger on Savage Rifles is great . I'm left handed myself but shoot mostly right handed bolt guns ,Just something to think about. unless one of your three boys is left handed , one of them will get Dads old Gun someday . I was on the Army Rifel Team for 16 years and shot right handed guns all that time .Gary Anderson is left handed and shot a righthanded winchester Mod. 70 in National compition at Camp Perry and was National Champion . its just a matter of getting use to it .
.308 is a good choice it will do anything the old 06 will do just 100 fps slower0
