Old rifle takes .351 ... ???

A family friend, retired, owns his father's rifle.
He says it is marked ".351"; it may be a Winchester (he thinks, but might have mixed that with another).

I found a caliber called ".350 Remington". Is this ammo the likely ammo for the rifle, based on my incomplete, second-hand description?

    Your friend is correct. The Winchester Model 1907, semi-automatic rifle, was chambered for the 351 Winchester Self Loading Cartridge.

    To the best of my knowledge, that was the only rifle chambered for the 351.

    Hello, No what you need is .351 Winchester Self Loading. Look in the Collectable Ammo section and search for it. It is also Not .35 Winchester Self Loading.

    Thanks. I saw some excellent pictures of the rifle. There are three copies currently offered for sale on the GunBroker web site.

    I've found dies ($60) but no ammo. He has brass, so reloading is an option.

    There the old western scrounger or someone like that who has brass for the .351 (check in the back of the shotgun news and gunlist in the "ammunition section". He's gonna have to pay a premium for brass or loaded ammo though as there's a limited amount of both available.

    Don't expect it to be a tack driver as these were not known for their accuracy. If memory serves me right these rifles saw alot of time in the hands of prison gaurds.

    Woodman, original ammo was selling in the $50 - $75 range (for a 50 rd box) a few years back. Likely somewhat higher these days. Old West Scrounger (http://www.ows-ammunition.com/) has offered the ammo in the past. This is the Australian Bertram brass and I've yet to hear anyone waxing eloquent about Bertram's brass or ammo in any caliber; it sells because there is no alternative. OWS is the exclusive import agent for this company and likely the various obsolete designs carried were contracts they placed w/ Bertram. The .351 case can be fabricated from .357 Maximum brass, but it is a flippin' PITA to do it. The real hassle comes with jacketed bullets. Probably there is a custom maker out there somewhere who could swage these for your friend or perhaps your friend is willing to invest in some Corbin equipment. I had several thousand 180gr RNSP made for me by Barnes long time back when I had a custom loading business (all used or sold now). Barnes has gone in a different direction over the past 10 - 15 years and I believe they no longer undertake this sort of custom work . . . which is sad, as their "original" type bullets in these oddball configurations were far better than any of the factory offerings when the ammo was readily available. Lyman did have a mould for cast bullets, but since they were taken over, most of those beautiful old designs have been dropped from their line. If he can find one in decent shape, a hard alloy will keep the M1907 in fodder.

    Check the Cabella's catalog. They have .401 WSL (you think the .351 WSL is hard to find/expensive? Check out the cost of the ammo for the 1910 Winchester!) for about 40 a box, and I would have to assume that the newly manufactired 351 is there as well.

    There are a number of US suppliers of Bertram brass. My local baitshop stocks it, $24.30 per 20..
    Buffalo sells fine reformed brass for $40.00 per hundred. Loading data is widely available. Perhaps CH/4D has the best buy on dies, unless Lee makes them.
    Buffalo has 180 gr SP bullets for $27.20 per hundred, as does Huntington for a little more.

    Thanks for all the help. These rifles seem to have a dedicated following. I'll be able to put together a nice packet of information that will follow the rifle when it passes on to his son.

    I found a company that will reload brass, and also supply obsolete ammo, at a decent price.
