First gun purchase question and mississippi laws
Hi Guys first off let me say I live in biloxi mississippi and want to purchase a gun. Wether it be a handgun or rifle I haven't decided. I've never bought a gun before so I don't know what all I need? Do I need a permit? anything special etc?
Also let me add I have no criminal record i'm 23 not even a parking ticket. etc. my background is flawless. With that said, what all do I need to do to buy a handgun? Can I waltz into walmart or academy and buy a rifle or handgun on the spot? Do I need anything special besides money and an Id. ? I have about $250-$450 to spend aswell on my gun. Rifle wise I like the lever action 22's or a bolt action with clip? but I kind of would prefer either a glock type handgun or an old fashion non long barrel revolver. I'm mainly aiming at getting a handgun but are they harder to get?
With that said i'd rather walk into a pawn shop or walmart or academy and buy one out right like I said my range is $250-$450 i'd like to keep it as low as possiable and prefereably get a glock type handgun. With that said does anyone have any suggestions on what to get? This gun will be locked in my house and only used for security purposes. I've owned many of pellet guns so i'm somewhat farmiliar with not making mistakes.

If you are a MS resident and are 23 as you state, you can walk in and purchase a handgun or longgun in the state of MS, no permits required. You can get a used Glock for the price range you are looking at. Also a Henry lever 22 would run around 200.00. For a 22 with a clip I would look at a Marlin or Savage.
It is easier to get forgiveness than permission.0 -
I honestly recommend you find a gunshow in your area and just check everything out. Ignore the vendor sales lines for right now, they will tell you, generally, what they think you want to hear. See how the guns fit your hand, how it feels, how it points.
Asking someone what handgun to buy is like the old which is better argument between Ford and Chevy.
What do you want to do with your handgun, concealed carry, plinking, home defense, other? I personally recommend for a first handgun a revolver to learn the basics, if not that a Glock is a good way to go as it is very simple. Most importantly, find a handgun that fits your hand. Many swear by Sigs or 1911s, I don't care for either, none fit my hand well. For fun, SHTF, plinking, and home, I use a Glock 17. They are near indestructible and extremely reliable. For CCW I use a Kahr P9 which fits my hand like a glove.
Determine your use, find one that fits, take a training course, rent guns at a range to see how they work and operate (HIGHLY recommended). Talk to a patron at a gun show, find one that is friendly who would be willing to show you things to look for and give you info. There are usually guys who will help. Just watch out for those who think they know and don't.0 -
Another thing RJ - there are really lots of gunshows on the coast where you can buy any legal firearm with your accurate bona fides. I'm in Louisiana and I recently went to a show in Biloxi - mostly to look and browse (Louisianan can't directly buy handgun in Mississippi and I suspect the same is true for a Mississippian in Louisiana but I do not know for sure) There are frequent shows - three different sponsoring circuits - in and near New Orleans. Come see some guns, learn some stuff, get your interest stimulated and eat some boudin. The more you learn BEFORE you buy, the happier you will be with your purchase. Then you can really start buying some stuff (read guns) you know about. Your funds - $250 to $450 - will go a pretty long way toward a first, and even a second and maybe a third gun. Hey guys one more question. What is an FFL(I do believe it is a certified arms dealer with a liscense) So I assume walmart/pawnshop/academy are FFL's I always thought one had to have a permit or is that just to carry it off your property? Also don't they do background checks that's why I didn't think I could walk in and walk out with a handgun on the spot a rifle i could see maybe. Don't they run a background check(I thought I heard back in the day this took 3 days), but again like i said my background is flawless so I could careless. I think I would much rather an affordable glock since they seem to be very well built for beginers? Again this is for home defense and will be locked up. I don't care how it feels aslong as I can afford it and it shoots and gets the job done =p.

I have pellet rifles and hand pellet guns. but my fav is my Gamo PT-80 wich I believe resembles closely that of the barreta cougar if i'm not mistaken, here's a link to gamo's pt80 i'd like something along the dimensions in this. http://www.gamo-airguns.com/air-pistol-pt80.htm
So basically a glock of that size would be great for me... is there any decent glock models I can get or other guns in that range. I'd like to only spend $300-350 really but would rather not go upto $450 if need be.
Also i've never checked the guns at academy nor walmart i assume they only sell new ones? could a i get a lower end glock at walmart or academy for $300ish? I'm sure most of you can answer this one easily if not that price how much do they run?
Or is pawn shop cheaper? any other info much appreciated. thank you.

The gun shows are fun and nice but i'm more into japanese swords/high carbon-folded steel, this will be my only gun purchase exept a rifle later. So I'm not to hung up on alot of stuff I know the glocks are heavy duty and would get the job done for what I need. I know japanese swords but not a lick about guns.

Also if you are unsure of exactly what gun you wish to purchase , find a local gun range. The ones here will rent you a gun and allow you to try several different ones out. If your background is not gun oriented you might as well take a safety class while you are there , it never hurts to learn a little when you can. 0 -

FFL stands for Fedral Firearms License. To retail guns you must have this. However private individuals are allowed to sell their guns in private transactions.

Not sure about your state but most states require the gun to be unloaded and in a case. This would be the safest legal way to transport a firearm.

Once again not sure on your state, but all those retail FFL shops will do an Instant Background Check based off of your DL license. In IL the instant background check is an automated phone in system. You will also have to fill out a yellow 4473 form with your name, address, DOB, height weight, and some interesting questions.
Some states have waiting periods, here in Illinois it's 3 days for a handgun and 24 hours for a long gun. Illinois deems the waiting period to be a cooling off period (stupid IMHO). Once again I don't know the laws in MS, but I doubt that they have waiting periods.
Also if you are not a full US citizen, buying a gun may take longer. If you have a green card, you will need to bring that and 3 consecutive months proof of residency ending with this month (or month that you are buying the gun). These 3 months need to show your name and address and can be a bill like a phone, gas, electric, credit card bill. The shop will have to then, call and talk to a live person to get an approval.

Yes they run an instant check over the phone. The system will give the shop 4 answers:
1. Approved.
2. Delayed.
3. Denied.
4. System down call back tomorrow.
2 & 4 will require you to come back to shop. Delayals happen to all of us. Sometimes delays come from someone with a record having a similiar name as yours. Other times no one knows. I usually get instant approvals but one time when I changed my address I got delayed. Who knows.

I would recommend that before you buy you go find an indoor gun range that offers instruction on safe gun handling and rents handguns. BB guns don't lend themselves to safe gun handling. Remember if you mishandle a firearm it can and will kill you or your family. That's why I would recommend you get some basic firearms safety instruction.
As far as what particular guns? I like Glocks and would recommend you get a fulsize gun. Once again I recommend you go rent & shoot some different guns at an indoor range before buying.

Are you shocked that you can walk into Wal-Mart and buy an axe, an ice pick, a skillet, a knife, a shower curtain, a shovel, a ball peen hammer, a box of matches, etc? How much chaperoning do you need in this life? Maybe you really ought to stick with BB guns, or swords.

A good non-long barrel revolver is a used police model Smith and Wesson in .38 special. When all the police departments went over to semi autos a few years back these guns were sold by the thousands onto the civilian market.
This is a classic gun. Being a quality revolver it is one of the most reliable, simple to use guns ever made. They look great, ammo is cheap.
They won't have 'em at WalMart, need to go to a gun dealer. I have seen one for $300. If a gun dealer doesn't have one, he can order it.
A revolver is better for a rookie than semi auto because it is simpler to use, easier to maintain. Couldn't do better for home security.0 -

For one, you're comparing apples to oranges as one would say.... ugh those don't project lethal targets at the whim of a finger pull. Even with that said like I said this is my first gun i'm no gun law expert the pellet guns were just an example of everyday use and no fowl ups... if you can comprehend that.... that was my main point.. if I can't be safe with a 410fps pellet gun I don't think a real gun is too safe for me duh... again apples and oranges.. with that said thanks for your non contribution to this thread =p. It really helped me alot and if you knew anything about high carbon steel real samurai swords you know they could lob off lims with ease(I prefer them over guns... but lets face it this day and age a gun will outbeat a quality samurai sword unless your lucky and in tight quarters.. but thanks for the witty retort =p.

Just a suggestion, you should really look at some of the very nice former Soviet Block guns available. For the middle of your price range, you should be able to get a decent Makarov pistol and an SKS rifle, two of the most reliable firearms ever designed. The surplus commie block guns are a really good deal right now. The Makarov is no Glock, but has a HUGE following of users, is small enough to conceal fairly well, and is reasonably powerful. After all, it was the USSR Standard issue handgun for some 50 years. Figure you should be able to find both the Makarov and the SKS for around $300 to $350. That will leave you with about $100 extra. Around here, every once in a while a person will stumble upon a used Ruger 10/22 for $50 or $75, or a decent old pump shotgun for $100 or $125. From there, you have about everything you really need. Ain't nothing really better than a nice 12 gauge for home defense, except you need a nightstand handgun as well...
Most pawn shops I see have their guns way over priced. Find a part time or small time dealer to do the transfer. Or check your local newspapers classified and visit a couple of guns shows. Don't be afraid to bargain with folks at guns shows. Another good option around here is gun auctions. Fairly large gun auctions are usually found in the newspaper classified ads every two or three months around here.
