choosing just 1 powder for reloading ?
If you have a a 30-06 bolt action rifle, which will be used for hunting only,which 1 gunpowder would you choose and why?

Get a Nosler manual, the list the best powder and load for each bullet weight.
Your question dosn't provide enough information to provide a compatant answer, IE bullet weight 125gr and 220gr would get you 2 different answers.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
I am going to stick my neck out here,I have loaded for 40+ years the best powder for me for hunting is 4831 a surplus powder. Hodgdon is making it new now and will send free loading data,its hard to get a overload in this powder and seems safe as i start my grandkids loading with this.Get data at www.hodgdon.com tks hedge 0 -

One powder tht will do it all so to speak is IMR4350. I've loaded it in everything in the 30/06 for years and it never fails me for accuracy and velocity. My hunting load is the 150 grain SpeerSPBT. In my old Model 30 Remington it will group between 1/2 and 3/4 inch depending on what kind of day I'm having. The velocity averages 2863fps on the chronograph at 70-75 degrees. I had a load for it using the 130 hornady bullet for groudhogs but I've just about quit hunting hogs. It too would go under an inch with IMR4350. I have never needed or loaded for anything heavier than 180 grains for the 30/06 so I can't speak for its performance with the 190 to 250 grain loads. I shot Hodgdon susrplus 4831 for years until the supply of government powder ran out. Back in the 60's you could buy it for $1.50 to $2.00 a pound. I use surplus 4895 government powder in my Garands and they do just fine with it in them. My experience goes back to the 50's with the 30/06. I've loaded about every weight of bullet and most all of the powders and IMR4350 just seems excellent in the 30/06. My opinion only. Jim 0 -
IMR-4350
This is the premier powder for the 30/06. This powder is what I use for all my top accuracy/ hunting loads in my 30/06. My pet load is IMR-4350 with a 180 grain Spitzer Boat Tail bullet and in my Winchester Model 70 Lightweight I get 1" groups and sometimes sub 1" groups at 100 yards. This is a near max load in the Sierra book and has worked flawlessly for years and years, taking lots of game with it ( Sheep, Goat, Antelope, Deer, Elk)[;)]. I occasionally load some 190 Matchkings with the same powder and it shoots nice little groups as well. Try it you won't be disappointed.0 -
it's a nice thought, but you would be better off buying ammunition that relying on one powder.
I would go with a vihtavouri equivalent of something from 4895 to 4831 burn rate, whichever you like best, if you absolutely had to.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

I think JustC is right about just buying your ammo. Loading for one 30/06, hunting ammo only ,unless you hunt all the time is not worthwhile .At least to my way of looking at it.
However to answer your question if I could only have one powder it would be IMR 4350 . Hands down winner without a doubt from my experience.0 -
Well the question that i asked ( just 1 powder) for the 30-06 is interesting. Im a reloader and I only use commercial ammo that matches my handloads in velocity and bullet weight,when i absolutely have to.That way i know were it will basically shoot at . I personally have had good results with imr 4350 . 4895 and 4064 and similiar results with varget. But there is a powder that is catching my interest for the 30-06.That is hodgen h414. I dont know if any of you have tried it out,but this powder is absolutely wonderfull to work and the results at the range are impressive!It ranks up there with the top 3 powders and deserves to be looked at closely!Its consistant, its clean and predictable. 0 -

H414 is just H4350 in a sperical form, that's why it works so good in the 06.

My favorite 3006 load is 45 grains of IMR4064. When you start trying to load more than one different type of cartirdge with same powder you lose the accuracy benefits, but might save some money. You can do this when your just loading pistol, or just loading rifle cartirdges.
When I was in college I was trying to be a cheap as I could. I shot lots of trap and target pistol loads. I used to use Hercules Red Dot for 12 guage shotshell reloading as well as .38 Special wadcutters. Red Dot was a great shotshell powder and a half decent powder for .38 Specials, but just a little too much Red Dot in a pistol case could have been dangerous.0 -
Obviously just my opinion but I would go with IMR 4350. I use it for 243(100gr bullet), 6mm(100gr, 75gr), 7mm-08(140gr), 280(140gr, 154gr), and 338WM(225gr). My father uses it in his 243(100gr) and 30-06 (150gr). I also have had success with IMR 4831 too. The 30-06 seems to be the "jack-of-all-trades" for cartridges and I feel that IMR-4350 is the same thing for powders. They make a great couple!

If I had to pick ONE powder it'd be IMR4350,however for accuracy in the 3006,I use WW748 for the best groups with 150 gr. bullets.Just my two cents worth,Bob. 0 -
IMR 4350 and speer, nosler and hornady 165 and 180 grain bullets work great with the 30/06. reloader 22 has worked well too.

Whats your point? Why just one powder? The goal of reloading is finding the "right" powder with the 'right' primer for the best accuracy and velocity for a given bullet. The 30-06 is no different that any other cartridge in this respect. You have many responses and they are good starting points for loads in YOUR rifle. JMHO

What is the point? I think you answered that ! the responces! As a reloader ,one can come up with what works good for them, but it may not work for others exactly like it did for you.The goal is trying to find the right powder and right primer for yourself! A quicker way to do that besides money and trial and error is get opinions from people that have been doing this for a long time and are knowledgable and willing to share with others.I think that is partly why this forum is here! 0
