Browning D.O.B and Value

Have a chance at a semi-auto (Ser.8m161xx)with 2 barrels one 18'' and the other 30'' both vented ribs. 85-90% condition(a little Grouse action,light scratches on stock)any input on value and when it was manufactured would be helpful. Thank You, Karl
P.S.Only looking for ballpark price not a quote.

    As Browning had made for them, a number of different semi-autos over the years. It would be best to go to their web-site, to research yours.

    As far as the value is concerned, besides this site their are other on-line auctions and brokerages that have many Brownings advertised. With a little research on your part, you should be able to come up with a ballpark value for the shotgun.

    Kar - I believe you have a Browning FN Standard ("M") 12 ga A-5, manufactured in 1958 ("8" preceding the "M") The rest of the digits comprise the serial number.

    As to value, a fairly wide range - $350 to $450 - I'd say. That would be the gun with one legal barrel. Not as sought-after as the Light Twelve.

    The 18" barrel may not have lots of value as it is almost surely a sawn off barrel with cylinder choke/no choke (I'd measure that short barrel with it mounted on the receiver, bolt closed, length from face of bolt to end of muzzle - there sre some legal restrictions on short barrel shotguns. If legal, the short barrel may add $100 to the package.

    RufeSnow's advice is excellent to gauge real-world value. See what others have sold for. I have given you my thoughts only and, according to my surly friends, they are rarely in step with the real world.

    Look at anything special re the barrel, stocks, generally avoid add-ons like pads, sling studs in the stock and vari-chokes. I'd prefer more open choke like modified over full. Good luck and welcome to the boards.
