? on Savage Model 4

Do any of you own one? What can you tell me about quality, value, collectibility, etc. I saw one for sale this week. It's a .22 LR, box magazine fed, bolt action with checkering. Looks to be about 40-50 years old. Asking price is &119. Thanks for any information.

    well made, durable and accurate with the right sights. Probably older than you estimate, 1930's-1940's. The price you mention is fair if the condition is sound. The rifle will outlast you.
    Generic Savage magazines from Brownells' and other sources will fit this rifle.

    These are excellent little rifles, somewhat reminiscent in appearance and function to contemporary Winchesters of that type. They tend to be somewhat small in scale, being a bit of a "boys" rifle but should still prove very shootable and a pleasure to own. Price looks right for the condition if you can get it for that. Unless I'm mistaken (and I could well be) the Savage model 19 mags should fit fine.

    Thank you both for the information on the Savage .22 rifle. If it is still in the shop tomorrow, it's going home with me.

    the early model 19 mags will not fit; they are fairly straight. The later model 19/33 used a curved magazine which will interchange with the model 4. The model 4 was not a downsized boy's rifle, it has a full size stock and 24" barrel. The Stevens line of single shot falling block rifles were sized for boys; none of the Savage models were.
