Savage 1899 information needed
I bought a very nice Savage rifle today marked 1899 Model. The serial number is 241xxx. Caliber is 250-3000. The barrel is a fast tapering 22 inches. The stock is walnut with a pistol grip and checkering. I took off the forend and an arrow showed the direction to turn to loosen the barrel. I did and it screwed right off. Could someone in the know please tell me what I have (model number) year made and approximate value? It is in excellent condition and shows no signs of reblue, refinish, or repairs. Thanks.

Seems like you got a winner there! As long as it's all original,i.e. hasn't been drilled for scope/receiver sights, etc.
The book identifies it as a Model 99-G Delux Takedown Pistol Grip Rifle. In 250-3000 it valued between $1500 & $2250, in the condition you describe.

rufe-snow is correct and you could have a real gem if it does in fact have the pistol grip stock and is all original. I put the D.O.M. late 1922. Congrats

Thank you all for the information. I am excited about this rifle. It has been well cared for. It was clean and in almost perfect condition with just enough wear to be the original bluing and stock finish. I forgot to mention that I found a matching serial number under the forearm and the Savage Quality seal (Indian Chief) etched on the lower part of the buttplate. The bore looks like a new one and is mirror bright. I plan to shoot it and make it a part-time deer rifle. There were two holes drilled and tapped on the rear of the receiver for a tang sight, but luckily no others. I believe these were factory holes. I hope to find an original tang sight but may just go with the rear sight on the barrel. Is factory ammo still available in .250/3000? or is 250 Savage the proper name? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with me. I think this is my best rifle purchase to date. I like it even better than my 30/40 1892 Krag. I'll try to post a picture when I get my digital camera mysteries figured out. 0 -
Yes, .250-3000 is the same cartridge. One other thing you'll find is because of the rotary magazine, you are able to use spitzer or pointed projectiles, which very few other lever rifles are able to.
