Need to cut stock for peep sight?????

Is it necessary to cut the stock on a pre 64 70 to mount a Lyman 48 or similar peep sight?

  armcandy,
  The stock on the pre 1964 Model 70 Winchester does requires
  a notch to mount the Lyman 48 sight. Other peep sights such as Redfield, Williams *usually* do not require stock modification.
