Cleaning firearms and effect of solvents/oil on sc

Hi;
After cleaning my rifles I store them in a gun cabinent. I like to leave a film of oil on the barrel and action.
When I open the cabinent there is the smell of the oil. I am concerned the volatilized oil may attack the scope coating over time. I do keep lens caps on the scopes but know the fumes can probably work around the caps over time. Are my concerns well founded? Is there a recommended procedure or product which minimizes the potential lens coating attack? Thank you for the input.

    I doubt your fears will materialize, but it's not a good idea to leave much oil on a stored gun, as it can, and will get down into the wood over a period of time, and thats not a good thing. You would probably be better served by using the new gun wipes while your guns are in storage.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    Too much oil attracts dirt. Oily dirt turns into gunk. Gunk causes a lot of problems. Most of us use too much oil. I don't think your scope lenses are in danger, however.

    I agree with the other posters about too much oil.

    But, the real problem here is the "gun cabinet". Your guns should be stored in a safe with a dessicant or Goldenrod, to protect them from 1) burglars, 2) misuse by someone in your house, & 3) moisture in the air.

    Store your less often shot guns muzzle down with a rag under the muzzle. It keeps the oil out of the wood as mrbruce said. Guns that get shot often get just a wipe with an oil cloth to remove finger salts before storing until shot again.
