Scope for my AR-15

Recently I purchased an AR-15 Bushmaster A3 Shorty Carbine. I would like to mount a scope on it, but since there are so many scopes, I hoped someone could "narrow the field of view" so to speak. I most likely will not be shooting at targets more than 500 yards away and realistically probably not consistantly more than 250. I would like a variable power with above average light gathering capabilities. An illuminated reticle is nice, but not necessary. I am, however, a little gadget oriented and do like the "auto-ranging" features of scopes like the Leatherwood Sporter series and the Springfield Armory 1st/2nd/3rd Generation. More than likely you would need a 20" or 24" heavy barrel rifle at the ranges you are hoping for. At least, those are the barrel lengths that I use.

    As far as scopes go, gadgets are gadgets. You really need to consider what is the most important to you in the long run because a good scope will cost you. A scope with clear optics, distinct reticle, and generous eye relief are preferred to me. These qualities in a scope will give you the greatest flexibility in using it on different rifles and calibers. Personally I think a good quality 3x9 (Nikon, Leupold, etc,) is the best all round scope. For target shooting purposes go with an increased variable power range, such as up to 16 power with target knobs. My 2 cents.

    I have a leapers on Gunbroker auctions for 100 Works very good for just messing around and getting good groups. I also have the Trijicon and there Acog for around 750. Big differance .. both ways. If I were you I wouldn't spend a lot because your not shooting a match target type of gun.
