Need Win. model 21 Refinisher

I have a friend who had a model 21 Winchester that received smoke damage in a house fire. The shotgun was not subjected to extreme heat as the wood is not even scorched. Can anyone recommend a gunsmith who can do a first class restoration of both the wood and metal. He is aware it could be an expensive renovation.

    House fires produce smoke & gases (often superheated gases). You don't need scorching to ruin a gun with heat. Modern buildings often contain a fuel load of 16,000 BTUs per pound. A gun exposed to smoke alone should clean up easily. If your friend believes that his gun needs "restoration", I suspect that it may have been damaged beyond usability.

    Hello Herschel: there is only two places I would consider doing the restoration job. Galasan bought all the remaining Md 21 parts and barrels, from USRA when they closed out the Custom Shop at Winchester, and they produce the Md 21 today. Andy has the last matting machine and holds the license for the Md 21 vent rib.

    You are right it will be expensive to do a complete restoration. However since this was a house fire, the insurance, (homeowners policy) covers up to $5000 in sporting goods. Tell your friend to check into this!!

    Neal, My friend's house caught fire in his gun and ammo storage room. The best explanation they came up with was that some old reloading powder spontaneously caught fire. This occured in the middle of the night and the house filled with smoke so quickly that the man and his son barely were able get out. Damage to the house ranged from total gutting in the area where the fire started to only smoke and water damage in the other end of the house. I should have mentioned that the gun suffered smoke and water damage. There was some delay in starting salvage operations so the double was beyond a simply cleanup when it was recovered.

    Only Winchesters, Thanks for the names of the two restorers. That is the kind of information we were seeking. My friend had a great homeowner's policy as it paid much more the standard $5,000 for sporting goods. He was fortunate in this respect as he had more than 50 guns destroyed.

    This young man is exceptional at everything. I've mentioned his name to people seeking custom guns and I'll pass it to you for another reason. He recently had 10 or 12 firearms brought to him because of a house fire. The damage varied on each gun but they were all high end guns the owner entrusted to Mr. Ulmer. They ran from very rare Browning trap and skeet guns to a mint Holland and Holland Royal grade double rifle. He is very very good and I think reasonable.
