gskyhawk: 30-30 Contender Barrel Question

Hello. In another thread you suggested to drop a line to you concerning information on 30-30 Win. barrels in 21' length for a T/C Contender. I tried e-mailing you but you do not have a link posted in your profile.

As discussed in a provious (locked) thread, I was searching for data and a possibility of using a 30-30 barrel in rifle length for deer hunting or target shooting.

I need your input regarding such barrel, and whether it should be obtained with a "muzzle brake" or standard. I understand you have some experience in this subject.

Also, if you or somebody can suggest and "affordable" source for stainless steel barrels in this caliber and in .223 Remington (heavy/bull and regular taper) that has readily available barrels that you do not need to wait months on end, I would appreciate it. If stainless barrels are not as easyly available, I suppose a good blued steel would do too.

  These are currently only available in blue and 21" and 23" but there is a 24" SS in .223 bull barrel configuration under the T/C Custom Shop barrels for more money.
  
  Al Lewis used to be the very best in Contender barrels but he is no longer in business.
  
  I don't consider the 30-30 to be a target cartridge at all, but if that's what trips your trigger then so be it. I shoot the 30-30 in a 14" pistol set-up and I find that the factory Remington cartridges loaded with the 170 gr. FN bullets shoot and perform the best for me. That's saying a lot since I'm a hardcore handloader. But it's perfect for walking and stalking in the deep woods where my shots don't ever exceed 100 yards and there is always a tree to use for a hold position. Simple and easy for hunting with a low carry crossdraw holster which allows for hands-free maneuvering up and down the thick, tree covered hills. This is not for the recoil sensitive shooter by any means, it is a real handful! But I have never used a muzzle brake with this gun. Start with low powered loads and work your way up to the hunting loads.

  RadCat: recoil in 30-30 carbine contender is about the same as in a Win 94 really no big deal , my 13 year old son shoots a 21" 7x30 Waters with no problems, so I don't think there is any reason for a muzzle brake on a 21" barrel , I would just go with a standard barrel ,
  
  I think you will find the 30-30 accurate enough for hunting but I doubt you would think of it was a target rifle, most of my groups in the 30-30 or 7x30 waters run around an inch or so at 100 yards , I usually just put a 4 power or maybe a 2x7 on the rifle, because they are used deering hunting , don't really need anything more in my area
