colt 2nd issue NM sear misfire puzzle

1955 colt 2nd issue GILES NM. 22 remington match bullets. load the gun, line ready? line is ready, ready left - right, ready on the firing line, raise it up and sqeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze, click. you can feel it come off but it doesnt fire. so, you take your finger off the trigger and BANG! gun cycles and fires perfectly for the rest of the day.
put it away, take it out next week, click......BANG on first shot ONLY.
what is happening here folks???

    Hello BOBSKI a tupperware gun will never take the place of a GILES however I am puzzeled at your term of 2nd issure colt NM in 22 rimfire. Is this a MATCH TARGET WOODSMAN or is this a conversion unit on a 1911 type frame?

    Your terminology is not clear? Is the pistol a accurized conversion unit, or a 2nd Series Woodsman Target Model that Giles worked over?

    If it's the conversion unit start swapping out parts, i.e. disconector, sear, grip safety, till you isolated the problem.

    If it's the Woodsman you got way more of a problem as they have been out of print for 50 years now. First thing I would do, or have a KNOWLEDGABLE gunsmith do, would be to strip it completely, then clean all the gunk out of the innards. It's unbelieveable the amount of crap a 22 will accumulate over the years, internally. Hopefully a through cleaning will solve your problem.

    Hello I hope you got my photos . What you have is a colt match target 2nd model made probable in the 50's with an S in the serial number just like the custom gun in my picture. I believe rufe-snow is correct about the GUNK. The take down of this pistol is fairly straight forward and the first thing I would do is clean without removeing hammer sear springs or pins . To do this you must understand how it is put together The back of the grip frame acts as a slide stop.The first thing you do is press down on small button on top of slide and while holding this down cycle the slide.This will latch the recoil spring. Then push in and up on the back of the grip frame where the web of your hand goes. this will allow you to remove grip frame .with grip frame removed you can slide the slide straight to the rear and off.I think that the gunk plus storage has made the grease lock up your internal parts I would remove the grips and use Carb or Brake cleaner and wash parts in the gun. then relube. I like none harding BALISTOL. and would avoid WD40 at all cost.If this does not work pay me a visit I have bunches of parts for these old guns and have worked on them..Ps feel free to use my pictures Rufe Snow might want to see them. I don't know how to post to this site. The custom pistol was built as I believe the first AMERICAN attemp to dup. the grip angle of a 1911 it was made by a dear friend and fellow perry shooter in the 50's when he worked at Remington the barrel is from a model 37.REM.
