What is this old Smith &Wesson Pistol ?
It has wood grips, top break action, 4 inch barrel, 5 shot revolver, double action, 38 special cal. Nickel finish. I am wondering what model ?? year ?? value ??...Thank you

nyforester, I believe you are mistaken about the caliber. The top break revolvers came in .38 Smith & Wesson caliber. Not .38 Special. The cartridges are not interchangeable. 0 -

Yes - thank you, my mistake. It is 38 S&W caliber. I am confused because the serial number makes it a Third Model, but my pistol has wood grips. It is the fifth model that mentions wood grips. I guess they could be after market grips. 0 -
Couple things here.
Accepting that it is 38 cal.
Can't be a 5th Model as the front sight was forged into the barrel, not pinned.
Second, none are reported to have come with a nickle finish trigger guard, so that would have been done after the revolver left the factory.
Third, be sure that the grips are in fact wood. No way to tell from your picture, but there are some hard rubber, mottled red, checkered grips out there. Maybe S&W maybe not ... there were some S&W grips that did not have the logo. The latter was an early move to further make S&W revolvers more distinguishable from knock-offs. However, I've also seen aftermarket grips in wood and rubber that look very similar to yours.
