Drill and tap tips

Hello I hope you ment that you wanted to drill and tap the barrel. On a 22 pistol that is straight blow back a red dot sight and mounts would add too much weight to the slide to function. If you are going to drill the barrel it goes unsaid that too deep a hole will result in a non intended porting of the barrel . I would get some good taps from brownell's and include a bottoming tap. I like to mount the base on the barrel with a clamp and use a layout center punch that will just fit the hole in the mount..Barrels are much softer then say a colt 1911 GI slide .

Be sure you have the right screws for which are the holes tapped for. Most scopes or sightings systems uses a not standard thread pitch. You have to get the tapping tools and then get the screws. Caculate the diameter of the original hole and tape it square related to the barrel axis. Barrel steel as said by Perry are pretty soft. Don't even touch the rifling inside as it would damage the accuracy for ever. Luck!

You guys sre right I meant to say the barrel.
I'll be tapping it over the port just aft of the chamber.
The slide is located under the barrel.
BUT as I look at it, I'm thinking I should leave this to someone
    more qualified.
    Thanks

While I have drilled and tapped hundreds of holes in things, if it were mine I would leave the gun drilling and tapping to someone who has a milling machine. The part can be fixtured up rigidly in a vise and the holes can be drilled and tapped accurately and squarely.

mt357 has got it right ....milling machine can center up on the bore & drill centerline & 90 degrees ...on round bbls i have started a flat with the appropriate end mill, countersink center, drill hole correct minor diameter, then thread with regular & bottom tap using a tap-n-guide while locked in the initial setup.....can't do this accurately with a harbor freight drill press...have seen bbls & recievers with series of holes hidden under a mount till they got it close..........
