make my own 410 slugs?
anybody ever make thier own 410 slugs?where would i find info on this?load data,etc?thanks don

hotbbot, if you can locate a 1960 or so Lyman Reloading handbook you might find what you're looking for. Lyman offered, back then. a mold for .410 slugs and listed loads for them. The slug weighed a half ounce as I remember it. When I get home I'll try to find the Manual and see if I can tell you more.

I've never shot a slug through a .410. My friend had a couple of rounds of ball I tried once. I was not very impressed.I do shoot a lot of 45LC 165 Gr. RN through my kids .410 H&R Survivor. With the rifled barrel I think at shotgun range it does better then any slug would. The 45LC also doubles up in my S&W. I read a bad review of the .410/45 LC Survivors in rifle mode because of its long throat for the 3inch .410's. The kids and I love it. Always remember to take the choke out before you shoot a slug or bullet.Believe me I made the mistake once.
My first mistake was buying a .410 for my oldest one for Christmas before I ever priced the ammo..410 is the biggest rip-off in the world. I now have 4 kids with one on the way.We now have 3 .410's. Needless to say, I soon went out and bought a MEC 600 Jr. and learned to reload.
Another mistake I made was buying a ton of Federal .410's from Walley World so as to have a bunch of hulls to start my reloading. At the time they seemed to be a good deal. Little did I know then that they were the type of hull that was rolled crimped, not star, rolled! None of my reference books even mentioned roll crimping,or the over shot cards that are needed to make them work. It turns out the roll crimping went out of style about the middle of the 1950's. I guess Federal must have had one hell of a supply chain to supply these hulls that needed the over shot cards.
The biggest mistake of all that I made was buying 500 Federal .410 primers from a friend.Thats right .410 primers not every day garden variety 209's, but Fed.410's. Where do you ever find loading data for Fed.410 primers!?!?!? Well I was finally able to find one load for them.1/2-ounce lead shot, PRIMER Fed.410, POWDER Alliant2400, WAD Fed 410SC, POWDER CHARGE/VELOCITY 13.5/1200, PRESSURE 12,000psi.
As I burn up my Federal hulls I'm switching to Winchester AA HS hulls.

ddhotbot, I've been a-lookin' and a-lookin!! Finally found the old manual; Lyman Reloading Manual, 44th Edition. Dated 1967.
.410 2-1/2" slug load: 238 gr. slug, 20 grs. IMR 4227, Rem. #69 primer, (3) Rem. 3/16" felt wads, one Rem..135 card wad, 1320 fps.
You can use, per the manual, up to 23 grs. of 4227, same wad column, up to 1565 fps. Wad pressure; 1 to 100 lbs as required to get the components in the case. Rolled crimp.
A note says use only with Lyman Slug Moulds. Cast with #2 alloy.
Rem. and Peters plastic S.P. cases. Rolled crimp.
I remember discussing this with a friend years ago but never tried it. Sounds like a knocker.

Wow a 238 grain slug in a 410! The factory ones are less than 100, and don't move that fast.
